New Tubes for my 6534

Little late, I'd've gone with EH or JJ 6CA7s, to my ears they are the best sounding EL34 type tube - the mids of the EL34s there but with the 6L6's size.

But once you get this done, you need to post some clips!

Ok:

I bought SED C EL34 , perfect matched quad( below 1ma difference), biased them at 36 ma (480PV).
Mids and highs are great , veeery smooth. Lots of punch , very gainy sound. But low end ... When I put the C in place of Rubies BHT my amp lost balls, just imagine - like neutered dog. My amp with SED has about half low end in comparision with rubies. I played about 20 hours in 4 days in moderate volume (3.5/10) and boom , one of the power tube died :bash:

I was really mad and angry ... Of course I returned the tubes and I wanted to get my money back. Instead I bought TAD EL34B STR which is essentially about the same as Ruby version and wow ... My amp has balls again ...

Conclusion ?

SED C EL34 = overrated. They sound great , if you like neutered hard rock sound. Not my cup of tea.

CLIPS!

Agreed about EL34s in general. They are just too thin sounding to my ears.

Check out the 6CA7s or KT77s for more oophm w still the EL34 grind.

I really like the Tung Sol EL34Bs. They have the halfway between and EL34 and 6L6 thing going on like KT77s, but not quite as dry as the 77s. Plenty of low end.
