Hi,

I'm looking into switching out the 6L6's on my knucklehead reverb.

I like EL34's, but I'm also searching for a tube that will give some
extra low end and low mids punch, maybe some EL34 variant?

Thanks,
trippled.

I put some of these in my MKV. Added some depth and crunch from the 6L6. LIttle clip of the advert.

The JJ-EL34L's 1st grid can take a larger maximun voltage than a standard EL34. (-13.5 to -16 volts as compared to -10 to -13.5 volts)

I take it you´ve already done some experimenting with the preamp tubes? Every Rivera I´ve had has delivered surprisingly big changes in tone depending on which 12AX7´s I´ve stuck in there.

Ok so I talked to eurotubes and talked to doug'stubes and they both
gave me completely different recommendations:

Eurotubes:

Option A:
a matched set of the JJ E34L's and five of the JJ ECC83S preamp tubes.

Option B:
Same thing but with kt77's.

Doug'stubes:

RUBY EL34BSTR's and for the 5 x 12AX7's do a Tung-
> Sol in V1,
> Ruby HG+ in V2, a regular Ruby AC5 select($11.50) in V3, and
> Sovtek LPS in
> V4 and V5.

Samples of the tome I'm aiming for:

Well, regarding the preamp tubes... to my ears JJs will smooth out your top end a bit, which I guess could be heard as having more low-mids and lows, and the Tung-Sols will make it crisp and tight... which I think is what you might be after. Tight lows are punchier than big lows in my book. As far the low mids, well, the Knuckleheads are distinctly high-mid amps, except maybe the K-Tre which sounds a little different... so you might want to check out the Xotic BB pedal, or something along those lines, to add some kick in that area.
