Nice intro, but holy crap, DLR should not touch a mic...ever.

Here's a piece of another new tune on this page...the trouble with never. It's got promise and more up tempo than the 1st 2 songs.

Thanks! Sounds like Van Halen. Personally I think the album has a chance to be pretty good. It's rare I find an album where I like every song a lot.

Also I think it's stupid for guys to be writing them off with just about 6 minutes of the whole thing able to be heard.

Sure he isn't what he was but what he was wasn't a great singer. Sure I think at points he's trying a bit too hard but some of you guys act as if he was a Steve Perry that now sounds like Bob Dylan.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the guitar pan. Sounds like each string is panned left or right. That pan makes it hard to listen to.

Hard to hear on my crappy computer speakers, but the pan is probably due to him using a Kramer Ripley guitar (or new EVH gear variant), where you can pan all of the 6 strings around in the stereo spectrum. Example, even strings panned hard left, odd strings panned hard right.

Really sounds like a van halen song. I mean it has their signature sound on it. Just sounds like a bunch of notes to me though. Like a jam session or something. Nothing hooks me to it. Nothing makes me go, "yes."

I mean, it isn't horrible.

Take the vocals out and it's a pretty cool, little piece of music. I've definitely heard these riffs hundreds of times...used to collect anything and everything VH.

Ironically, I like Dave's part the best. The rest of the track is a giant blah for me. There is a reason that this is from the Wild Life and not a VH record from their most successful part of their career. That is because it didn't make the cut then. Remember Donut City? Same thing. Not bad, but compare it to Hot for Teacher or Top Jimmy...

As someone who lists Eddie as a huge influence.... I think history will say that Van Halen should have stopped making records after the Balance album. There are simply too many other great bands now to justify spending money on this album based off of the songs I have heard. Some of the older bands, like Rush still crank out a quality album with every new release. This new VH album is just very uninspiring from the clips I've heard. Just my two cents. YMMV...

I totally agree with you on that and EVH was a huge influence on my playing up until I heard Rhoads and Lynch. I have been listening to VH since the first LP and was a huge diehard fan until Diver Down and then I was like what the heck, but bounced back when 1984 was released and while I still liked them even in Hagar years, EVH became my least fav guitarist as the years gone by and I am at the point where I really don't care and have not really cared since Balance. And while I do not expect them to be like they were back in their glory days, this is not very inspirational and borderline sucks Write some new songs!!! And just because you are older, does not mean you have to stop rockin!!! .

Oh I wasn't aware of that guitar. It's all over the place just sounds wrong.

Stay Frosty preview:

Gets heavy around 1:09. This must be the Ice Cream Man #2...

This was leaked at TGP earlier. Didn't see it here yet

Is anyone else having trouble with Roth's pitch on the second line he sings "saints and the sinners"? I mean, to my ear, the first time I heard it I was having that dissonant annoyance thing happening in my ears. However, the fact that this has gone on to the second page with no one else mentioning it, makes me wonder if my ear just isn't processing it right. To me it sounds off pitch, but how would that make it through all the engineers, band members and producers?

I don't know, maybe my ears aren't working right...

And that intro riff... that second guitar note being just a muted percussive "thunk" makes it sound like a mistake. He repeats it, but it just sounds strange to me.

I listened to it three more time and you are right, Roth is out of tune on "saints"... I find that better than his straining horribly for the high notes though...

Steve

not too bad, little happier than I'd prefer ala van hagar/solo roth, but meh, better than fm radio...

So,for the naysayers....

DLR. Check. Hate it.
Less processed tone. Check. Hate it.
80s songs. Check. Hate it.

I guess you just have to be careful what you wish for. Perhaps some Sammy and more modern tunes would have been better for you.

I heard it but its no secret Roth can be a little pitchy. I would rather hear a note a little flat than have the piss auto tuned out of it. That probably happened anyway though....

I love Roth era VH, and was even pretty happy with the 2 tunes on the greatest hits. This new album is shaping up to be a joke without a punchline for me.

It (Roth's "saints") definitely sounds intentional to me. There's a goofy little chord under there and he's doing it to be clever. A little slide on the note.

And by the way, I don't like ANY of the tones I've heard so far. I don't really want to pick things apart too much, I just want to enjoy some new VH.
