being a citizen of an irrelevant little country makes many of the citizens seek relevance, attention, etc., and they become obsessed with other more powerful and relevant countries' internal politics. They're overcome with the realization of their own inadequacies, irrelevance and impotence and lash out with irrational hatred and lose all sense of reality, logic and reason to compensate and convince themselves they matter when the don't.

It's sad and pathetic way to live.
