I'm trying to think of my next amp, and I figured I'd let Rig-Talk decide along with me. After all, we love spending each other's money, right?  I currently own the following:

Marshall JCM800 2204
Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier
Mesa/Boogie Mark III
Peavey 5150

Since I'm a metal player, high gain is what I'm focusing on, but I'd also like a nice clean if possible. The Savage 120 would be the most different compared to what I currently have, but it's also the most expensive. I'm also not sure I'm a fan of the midrange in clips. The JVM does the versatile hot-rodded Marshall sound quite well, but I already have a JCM800. The 5150 III looks enticing, especially since my favorite amp for rhythm is my 5150, but the reliability is questionable.

Thoughts? Comments? If you have any other amp suggestions, let's keep them at or under $1800.

the Recto doesn't seem to fit there. All other three are tight amps..... unless you plan on boosting the recto.

I first listed the amps I already own, not the amps I want to buy.

Diezel dude, you don't have the best metal amp on your list..

Can't afford one.

The JVM goes above the modded marshall thing, od2 has that mid scoop thing working and more compressed for that more modern sound. Retarded gain levels. It will not replace that 800 imo, will get close but not replace it.

That said I looked at the budget and what you had and my choice would be a VHT. The VHT and Recto would be huge together.

Keep in mind, I'm not looking to replace an amp. I'm just looking to add an amp for the time being. The JCM800 is so fucking hacked up that nobody would buy it anyway.

I'm actually not a fan of VHT amps. There's something about their lack of saturation that gets me.

ohh you're right, my bad.

in that case, I'd take a look at a Titan, those sound VERY good from the clips and videos I've heard......

that's one mean sounding amp.... I like it!

Replacing as not replacing that roar, not the amp :gethim:  It is close though, been playing more on the crunch channels and boosting for feel.

Look at the Baron stuff, well priced and the builder is really cool.

IMO cannot go wrong with the JVM either, still love mine after 4 years.

5150 III or bust. The Baron K2 and 5150 III are the only two amps that have survived in my collection for over a year so far ;)

I have owned a JVM 410H and have spent time with the Savage. For straight up metal the Savage smokes the JVM IMO. The Engl has a way better clean channel too. I really dislike the JVM clean or Marshall clean for that matter. Not a Marshall hater by any means but for modern metal the Savage is tough to beat. If I didn't own an SE I would have the Savage. So my vote is Savage.

I have heard great things about the 5153 but have not had the chance to try one.......yet.

I didn't want to "cheat" and just say other. I wanted to choose between the ones you have listed. I'd say JVM410 - GOOD STUFF :D

I said other.Diezel or Fortin Natas if price is no concern. Also for high gain stuff Mako 4.

Price does matter, as stated in the first post. The Mak 4 is also intriguing, but I'm looking for a head at the moment and not a rack setup.

I had a 5153 and a few JVMs. I'm surprised how much I liked the 5153. The JVM was extremely versatile with a very good clean and two very good high gain modes. I think you'd find either of those interesting and fun to play.

Titan could be another choice. Lows were big and very tight. More versatile than you'd think (with the contour control) and if he tamed the highs a bit it would be close to perfect for many high gain fans.

I recently got a K88 and am going to jump in with support for it every chance I get. It is hyper-aggressive, roaring, crunchy, tight, dry, and "organic". Very nice cleans too. Maybe a little high in the mids but that's only when I stand right in front of it. I like high mids though and they can be tamed anyway. Works quite well at living room volumes as well. The amp brings a smile to my face every time I play it. I don't know how it stacks up to some of the other stuff out there that I haven't tried but I'm not worried about it. The amp is really impressive.

I vote for the JVM as there may be a minty JVM in the classifieds soon :D

I would like to get me an old Fender Tweed. Damn, they are so expensive.

The ENGL Savage is one of the best amps that I've played in recent years. It gets pigeonholed as a metal amp (which it excels at) but it can easily do the more classic tones as well.

What didn't you like about the midrange in the clips that you've heard? I found that you can easily dial in scooped tones as well as mid-pushed hot-rodded Marshall type tones. I didn't feel that it had a dominant "midrange style"...it was really versatile in that regard. Worth checking out for sure.
