Why do I prefer playing my Gibson Les Paul Standard 50s over my R9 and R8?

I have a couple of Gibson Custom shops mostly acquired from Gibson Demo shop which I’m extremely happy about them. I also own a Gibson AJ standard which I bought used for a great price around 2 years ago. I overall prefer the Customs, specially my LPC, but the Standard trades blows in terms of quality, sound and playability. I bet if I covered the headstock it wouldn’t be easy to distinguish between the two.

A good friend of mine has a shit ton of Custom Shops (his dad is a heart doctor), and I've played all of them. He has some great guitars, but I have always liked the regular Standards and Classics more.

R0 is what I'm looking for, most likely V2
I'm in a small market so it will likely cost me a road trip. They seem priced higher than a few others.
R0 will most likely cost more, they have very nice flame tops on them.

A great Gibson is a great Gibson whether it is USA or CS

I do think the Custom Shops are great guitars, but I also think a lot of us buy them for the prestige of having the best. As a Heart Doctor, I say he has earned that.

Love your guitar room @HowieJams, I'd happily kick my CS's to the curb if the standard was my fave!!

I agree, a great Gibson is a Great Gibson, doesn't matter is it is a Studio, Standard, or CS.
Right now my house is down to 10% Humidity, the Custom Shops are in heir cases with Humidipacks as are the Standards, but the Standards come out to play.
I can't wait for Spring to get some time with my Custom Shops.

You can have 20+ of the same guitars and there will ALWAYS be one that is the best one for you. It's something special about that specific one.

I still would never part with my R9, even if it isn't the one I grab first.
Same with my Custom Shop SG.
My R8 I could part with, but I would regret it.

Last night I decided to break out my Custom Shops (R8, R9, and SG 61 RI).

I also used my Gibson Les Paul Standard 50s Tobacco Burst.

The Custom Shops definitely have a more solid quality feel and they do sound better also.

I think the reason I grab the Standard 50s first is I am not afraid of accidentally banging them or having them out in low humidity levels, my house in the winter is typically under 15% humidity.

Last night I said WTH and brought out my Custom Shops anyway and it was great.
They feel so solid and the finish feels much better, the Standard 50s have a glossy feel that isn't as comfortable or as quality feeling.

Don't get me wrong, I still love my Standard 50s, but I love my Custom Shops more.
