I started playing in a 70's/80's classic rock cover band about a month ago and quickly determined I needed a more "era" appropriate axe so i started looking for a les paul. One of the stores I stopped in had several used/vintage les pauls and this:

It's a 1980 Aria Pro II LPC. Basically a copy of a Norlin era les paul custom: Solid Mahagony "pancake" body with maple top, mahagony neck, rosewood board, long neck tenon, super distortion copies, grovers and a finish/color that oozes 70's cheese :D I put it up against a 1976 LPC and a couple of recent les pauls and it held it's own. You can tell its definately not a gibson but for the money; I couldn't find a reason not to buy it. I took it to practice the other night and it performed better than I could have hoped. So if anyone has one of these in their closet, let me know

Great guitars!

+1 those guitars are great sleepers and work horses, happy NGD that thing looks like it will serve you more than well

Thanks fellas  I'm not usually a fan of thin necks but the neck on this is pretty sweet. Thinner than a '59 profile but not as thin as a '60s...perfect.

I like it. Has that coffee table type finish.

Are you keeping the pickups or going to try swapping?

The bridge pickup is ok but the neck pick up is not so good. So yes, some new pickups are in order. I'm gonna drop a duncan '78 in the bridge just for giggles but I really want to try a set of Dimarzio 36th anniverseries...
