So I finally get to do this for once... NGD!

Charvel Music Zoo Custom shop San Dimas in matte black, maple board. Always wanted a Charvel custom for a long time and finally got one. I've had a MIJ Pro Mod, and played the MIM Pro Mods, and this smokes them all.
It really is like a finely made sword! Amazing balance and perfect weight, everything on it just feels solid, even right down to the switch and volume knob. I know that sounds silly, but I've played a lot of wonky Charvel knobs in my life time. Fretwork is immaculate, I found it interesting the edges aren't rolled like the MIJ ones.
I'm planning to put a black BKP Holydiver in the bridge. The Quarter Pound neck is really sweet sounding, not touching that.
Oh and the case is pretty damn snazzy too.

Here's the original specs:

I had my eye on this one. I hesitated because I already have a Charvel that's very similar.

Nice score! That one is sweet. Very classy.

Congrats

Damn, that is awesome! I have an HS hardtail charvel MIM and it's killer! Congrats.

man you can't beat a quarter pound in an alder/maple guitar (although a dimarzio SDS 1 is pretty close)

that looks like a lot of fun, I had a MZ Charvel and miss it like crazy
congrats on a sweet guitar (and the case is pretty too)

Have you played the production version of those, hardtail or otherwise? If so, how does the quality of the less expensive models stack up? Thanks.

Damn! I love matte black guitars. Screw all the fancy swirls, colors and patterns. Nice score!!!

I have one of the newer MIM hard tails as well. The custom is more substantial in terms of weight, it's not a heavy guitar, but it's in my perfect sweet spot and feels very balanced. As mentioned in the original post, it's like a finely made sword, everything on it is perfect. I think the body wood is much better quality too. You can really tell the difference when I play something through the Kemper with headphones. Wood sounds very sweet and musical. The MIM is more abrasive, more boomy (although part of that is hard tail vs floyd), less articulate.
Neck finishing is amazing, my MIM was ok, but there's a substantial difference in the feel of the neck and quality of the fretwork.
I used to have one of the MIJ San Dimas as well, and it was better than the MIM, but not as good as the custom. To sum up, the MIM hard tail feels like a light toy, the MIJ a good all around player, the custom, a finely made weapon. I've not tried a US production. To be fair I did try a MIM So Cal last year in a store that felt really good. I think with the production models, its just a matter of luck with finding the right one that was made well.

Usually I don't spend a lot on guitars, but I'm glad I did on this one.
