I picked this up in a trade with a TGP member (an in person, meet, no less!) over the weekend, and I’m really stoked!

I’ve been following Mike‘s work and have always loved his approach- top quality with a slight twist compared to Suhr, Anderson, etc.

When DA 048 popped up in the Gear Page emporium I jumped on it!

Specs:
  • Mahogany body, maple cap, maple neck, ebony fretboard
  • Stainless steel frets
  • 1 11/16 nut width
  • Dimarzio Satchur8 bridge pickup, Dimarzio Satchtrack neck pickup
The guitar is light, lively, and super resonant. Build quality is exceptional- easily on par with my Anderson and Knaggs. The frets are so smmmoooooth to bend on, and the ebony adds to the ease of bends.

Acoustically it rings out nicely and notes have a nice sustain to them.

i will admit I’m meh on the pickups. The bridge is an alnico 8 wind, and it‘s a bit too in your face for my style. Easily addressed though- I have a Jalen Fair Warning and a Tone Nerd Whiskey incoming to see if those work better for me. The neck pickup is ok, but I may go to something a bit brighter/ less mids down the road.

All in all it’s a top quality guitar and I’m really happy with it. Rehearsal tonight, then summer gigs kick off in a few weeks- this will be a sweet addition on stage!

Nice. Personally I would put a standard nice sounding single coil in the neck. For me that’s the strat and possibly tele sound I like. That’s the only position I use on a strat….never played a telecaster so that’s just an assumption on my part.

That looks really nice!

I do notice the bridge pickup is really far away from the bridge. Or is that just an illusion from the Hipshot bridge and no pickup rings?

Yes, it's due to the hipshot and no ring. Bridge pickups are in the same place on all my guitars and if you measure from where the strings leave the saddles to the edge of the pickup it's the same distance as on the Floyded guitars. The difference is that a Floyd has a lot of extra metal in front of the saddles. If I were to move it closer on the hardtails just for looks they would sound much brighter which is not a positive thing. I stressed over pickup location when first designing my guitars since it makes a big difference in tone and decided to stick with what worked best on the Floyded guitars with the hardtails too and that worked for me. Technically I guess I could move it closer on a 1 off custom order if someone wanted, but they'd have to know what they're asking for beyond just looks realizing the tonal impact of it.

For reference, it's in the same place as this...

It's common with most brands to standardize the bridge pickup location based on string length and not bridge design aesthetics. Here's a great example of a Jackson with a Floyd and hardtail version of the same guitar...
