Got a Dean Soltero Standard. I was wanting a Les Paul style guitar for recording purposes but since I'm more a strat guy didnt want to drop a lot of coin because it get played as much. My friend pointed me towards the Dean so decided to try the Standard which a Korean made guitar and you know it's a really really nice guitar. It has the full maple cap that isnt just a veneer which doesn't have huge flames but not bad either. I've seen PRS called ten tops with the same flame. The frets were perfect and finsh was equally as nice. I set up the guitar with Kurt Magan 10's, replaced the mini pots with full size CTS 500K audio taper potentiometers and dropped in Motor City Afweyu's and she freaking rocks  Like I said I'm more a strat guy but I love the feel of this guitar and it will be getting more playing time than I thought. I've got about $850 in it but plays and sounds now like a guitar worth twice that. I'll post pics later.

Dude

congrats on such a killer guitar! I've played a bunch and they all just ring out very nicely! the Korean ones, the Japanese and of course the US ones! They all rule!

I'm an ML guy through and through, but I've been eyeing one of those Soltero's since they came out! I'd love to get one in "scary cherry", I am going to have to get one eventually, but I want one with the V headstock!

Anyhow I love my USA DFH and my original 81 ML!

Yeah this guitar is really nice. I mean now with good pickups and electronics in it you'd swear I paid much more for it than $850 and thats including the new parts. Also the stock pups werent the worse I've heard but I always put pups I like in all my guitars no matter the price. I also went ahead and did the pots too since those were the mini. BTW I got the "Scary Cherry".

I know there are guys who really like Gibsons and I do too since I've played some nice ones with knowing two guys that work for Gibson but I kinda like playing guitars that arent the run of the mill sometimes.

Hey Todd, did you have to modify the soltero to accomodate the new pots?

Nope they just dropped right in. I just picked this one up for $400 \:D/

Now I'm not a Les Paul guy so I dont have a ton of personal playing time with the real deals but my friend who does pointed me at the Deans saying they were great. I do think these guitars are a great deal and sound like a lot of Pauls I've played but like I said take it for what its worth. I just really like the necks of these better than LP's. With this one I just got, by dropping an Afwayu in the bridge and a Duncan P-Rial in the neck I'll have great sounding and playing guitar for around $700. The cool thing with the P-Rial in the neck is I can have a Paul style guitar with either a Bucker, P90, or Single coil in the neck.

Now that to me this is a guitar I can gig with and not worry about having your real expensive ones get damaged or stolen and still sound good. The expensive ones can stay at home for recording.

Oh yeah BTW I wrote a review of the guitar on my blog http://www.guitarmonkee.com

Oh yeah I really like the one have now so I wanted another one that I could put a different pup in the neck in for flexablity and not being locked in on a bucker in the neck. At $700 for another cool guitar that I can gig with it was a no brainer for me.
