Those are great guitars. Someone may correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd swear something was changed when it became the Axis, because they never felt the same.

http://www.music-man.com/faq/music-...d-the-model-that-took-its-place-the-axis.html

When Eddie left Ernie Ball/Music Man in 1995, the decision was made to keep the guitar in production pretty much the same as when it was the Eddie Van Halen guitar. All of the design, including the neck, pickups, and woods used are the same, but we made a few improvements:

1. The neck was widened slightly (1/32") at the body end. This was to correct problems for players who were having trouble with the high E string slipping off the neck on the 12th fret and up.

2. The switch was moved near the volume knob. This was done to help prevent accidental hitting of the switch, especially while strumming.

3. The "tone" knob was replaced by a volume knob (NOTE: it was always a volume pot - the "tone" knob was a sort of joke).

4. We added a comfort contour (a belly cut) to the top and back of the body.

Started tearing it down today and took a few more pictures. This one shows just how much it faded:

Neck pocket shows 1993 date as well as the back of the neck:

Started cleaning the neck and put a coat of tung oil on it to see the birdseye:

If anyone has any ideas about getting some of these funky stains out, I'm open to suggestions. That said, I'm afraid they go to deep into the wood...

That looks really cool man, can't wait to see pics when it's all cleaned up. If I recall correctly I saw a thread somewhere on the net where a guy used an electric toothbrush to clean out the wood grains, it just takes a while, not sure what solution/oil/cleaner was used though.

wow, that's unreal!

go get some GORGOMITE for that fretboard!!!!!

I feel kinda bad for the poor soul that had to pawn one of his obviously prized posessions as it is well "loved"...

That's what he gets for parking it outside its whole life! Holy crap...mine is the same age and looks like a case queen in comparison.

Nice score!

Great guitars, but geez, is that mold? Looks like it was left in a very wet basement for many years.
I wouldn't touch that neck. :D

Mold? No, its definately not mold. More like a water/sweat stain. Basically, whoever owned it was one sweaty/dirty MF   Never dried his hands or the fretboard down after use, left it out of the case a lot etc. The good news is the neck is straight as an arrow and the body is in realitively good shape cosmetically (no major dings, scratches, dents etc.). I'll probably have the frets leveled and dressed once I put it back together but all in all a kick ass guitar on the cheap :D

Don't feel bad, it looks like the guy only played cowboy chords on it any way. Great steal!!!

I'm in the market for that exact guitar myself, lucky bastid!

I've been stumbling upon nice, used EVH, Peavey Wolfgang, and EBMM axes in pawn shops and guitar shops for very nice prices as of late. I know of three out there right now. I just snagged this Peavey American HP Special last month from a friend in mint condition for $700 last month. NOT a big Peavey fan, but this one has really been a JOY to play and the brown tones that come out of it are just so rich and meaty.

The best way to deep clean those necks without hurting the wood is...Endust. Been using it for years on my Wolfgangs and it kept their necks looking brand new. Just make sure you apply lemon oil after. Or gun stock oil in the case of EBMM's.

Peavey HP's, Wolfgang's and EBMM are great guitars, never played the EVH. That guitar is beautiful, you got the steal of a lifetime.

Me either.

That black EVH, is that when you bought it brand new? My maple necks get all dirt and grime in them and after 3 years the dirt is pretty much never going away other than flat out sanding down past where it has wicked.

Yeah yeah I wipe them down, they just get dirty and that is your badge.

No, that black one wasn't new at the time of the picture. I bought it in '95 and played it fairly regularly for a couple years, but then it lost #1 status to a Tom Anderson, and later, an Les Paul. The black EBMM still looks like that to this day.

I don't think that's coming off, every maple neck has your signature, that's part of the beauty. Curious to see how it comes out.

You're right it's not coming off   I basically cleaned all of the funk of it and hit with steel wool and about 8 thin coats of tung oil over the course of a few days. Hit it with some gunstock wax and buffed. The stains are still there and the nice amber color but now it's clean and smooth as silk. I'll post some pics when I get it back from the shop. Having the frets leveled and dressed etc....

T'was a pretty good deal. Was gonna be $800, but I sold some stuff for him and have bought other stuff from him. Just picking-up an older VHT Pittbull Ultra Lead head with road case right now from him for $1000. And our mutual friend bought a minty Elmwood Modena M60 from him for $1000 last month. When he's motivated, he's MOTIVATED!
