As I mentioned in the Bottle Rocket thread I posted earlier, I received my EVH Star yesterday from Curt at Squid Music. It was kinda an impulse order I did quite awhile ago when they first announced them, because I've dug this guitar since I saw EVH play it live in '80 at the Sports Arena in LA. Always loved it... Honestly, I was a bit concerned about what the quality would be like because I'm used to some pretty high quality guitars, even the ones I'm slapping together myself, so when Curt dropped it off and I picked up the box, I was a initially concerned. It was so light that I asked Curt if the guitar was actually in the box and he replied that he hoped so, but maybe it was just the gig bag... I also did not like the Japanese Charvel I bought a few years ago. I had to work on the neck quite a bit to get it playable - had this really gummy yellow finish on it. I got the guitar out of the box at the studio and plugged it into the Bottle Rocket and it sounded cool - pretty aggressive - definitely would be able to cover the early VH stuff and beyond, but I was having some problems keeping it in tune, so I just put it away until I had some time to set it up properly.

Anyway, when I got home, I set the action, stretched the hell out of the strings and set up the D-tuna correctly. I have to say I'm very impressed with this thing. It played great, the finish looks great, it sounds really thick and aggressive (pickup may be a tad too aggressive actually) although it is really light with the basswood body, the Floyd feels really solid, neck is really nice. Frets are done nicely, ends are smooth. For ~ $1K, this is a very, very nice guitar and I've got a room full of really expensive stuff. I've heard some bad reports on the MIM Charvels, but this thing is killer. I love the Dano style headstock, although I know a lot of people HATE it... Pickup is screwed directly to the wood - although there is a pickup ring, the pickup is not connected to it at all. Kinda funny... The only thing I could complain about as far as fit and finish is that the EVH logo on the headstock is clearly off and not centered. I'm sure this would piss off some, but I kinda like it. :)

Anyway, if you are inclined towards this sort of thing, I highly recommend you contact Curt at Squid Music and grab one. He's got 'em in stock now as far as I know...

EVH is putting out some nice guitars if this, fairly reasonably priced guitar is any indication. Kinda interested in an expensive USA Wolfgang arch top now.... :thu:

Yeah! They are decent guitars. I had a bumblebee a year ago. It was a nice guitar for 1K. I'd still take a MIA/MIJ Charvel over it but they are close to the same. Once you sand that finish down a bit on the MIJ its right there with the US Charvel.
Anyway HNGD!

I appreciate your review and pics. You're definitely a guy with attention to detail which is very apparent in your amp and guitar builds. But for crying out loud can you please figure out how NOT to post GIGANTIC pics?!?

  :D

BUT... they're AWESOME!

Actually, I have a huge, high resolution monitor, so the pics don't look huge to me... I forget that, but 800x600 looks tiny on my screen...

I've never played the other stripe series guitars, but this guitar is definitely better than the MIJ Charvel I had, even with the yellow gunk sanded off...

Made in Mexico...ugh. Other than that looks cool.
Why ugh? This is the best $1000 guitar I've played - fit and finish, sound, playability. I'm, very impressed with this guitar regardless of where it was made... :dunno:

Hecho En Mexico = Fender

I'd be busting out the card if it had a hockey stick!

Reminds me of the old Akira Takasaki guitars, as is.

Just because it would be nice to see Made in USA on it...that's all. HNGD

Neck shape is the same as the other EVH striped series guitars/Charvel? I may get one..

Yeah, I'm curious about this too. I was actually hoping the neck was more like the U.S. pro mods rather than the other striped series guitars.

It seems like the headstock is a "love it or hate it" kind of situation. I can't stand the way it looks (I think it would look great with an Explorer-style-hockey-stick headstock shape), but if this is the exact same headstock EVH had on his guitar (and based on the previous thread a few months back, I think it's accurate), then it immediately gets some points from me for being historically accurate!

I'm not a huge EVH fan like some others on this board, so the only time I think I remember seeing EVH play a guitar like this, IIRC, it was an Ibanez Destroyer where Eddie cut a "V" section out of the body. Was that Ibanez Eddie played made out of basswood as well? I have an RG Custom that has a basswood body with a Floyd (okay, it's an Ibanez Edge Floyd), and that guitar is unbelievably lightweight.

Thanks for posting pics!

This is from the 1980 World Invasion Tour and he had the guitar with that headstock as early as 1979...

His hairstyle in that pic resembles the hairstyle wore by Peg in Married With Children.

It's pretty similar to the Pro Mod neck profile...
