Went and got the matching Mills 2x12 to go with my stack. Figured I could use for when I'm feeling lazy and don't want to lug the monster 4x12 to shows or for home use or whatever else.

It sounds pretty good. I tried the Legend V12's to go with it. Still need to break in more as I only have a few hours on them but it's no contest to the 4x12. That massive low end and all that air moving just cannot be replaced by a 2x12. Again it sounds really good but it's just not the same.

Going to give it some more hours to break in and then I'm going to throw some V30's in the 2x12 to see what that's like (since that is the speaker I'm used to) but I have feeling I'll end up selling it.

It's so cool to have the matching stack but I'll never be able to run them both together if I'm being realistic and I'll always prefer the 4x12 over the 2x12 I feel.

What do you all think? I know the 4x12 vs 2x12 thing is beat to death.

I went with the middle ground; a vertical slanted 2x12 for gigging.
Less weight than 4x12, but more volume (thus more low-end beef) than the typical horizontal 2x12.

My Engl 4x12 weighs over 120lbs! And it's just a hassle.

How's the mills compared to ubercab? And what power tubes are loaded in your uber? El34 or Kt88?

That's a can of worms

The Uberkab that I played was great. I am pretty sure it was the RL version and it had the typical X pattern. Sounded excellent and I'd recommend it to anyone.

The Mills 4x12 Afterburner is hands down the best cab I've ever played through. I'd like to try an Engl Pro and some others like Zilla, Wizard and Port City but I cannot see the Mills going anywhere, ever.

The low end is massive but very tight, the highs aren't harsh and the mids will bite. It projects very well too.

I play metal and I'm not sure how it would be for other styles but for what I do it is the cab for me.

Regarding tubes I actually have the original ARS tubes from 2002 I am pretty sure   I got it used so I can't be 100% but they're due for a change either way. I've been really debating having it modded to accept any KT88. That's what I want but the quoted time was too long to go without my amp so I'm still up in the air.

Pretty sure KT88 would be the way to go with the Rev. 2 but it still sounds nasty with the EL34.

I prefer 4x10 cabs to 2x12s. To me, the 2x12s I've tried just sound a bit scooped compared to 4x12s with the same speakers. 4x10s don't have as much low end extension as a 2x12 but sound fuller to me.

Neither compares to a 4x12, which has both the low end extension and the fullness.

That's not a bad idea. Never tried a 4x10 or a 1x15 for that matter.

This is my first 2x12 so idk what I'm dealing with but it sounds like it breaks up a little sooner at low volumes but sounds really nice cranked loud AF.

To be honest if I didnt have my Mills 4x12 the 2x12 would be acceptable. It sounds good and I like it. Miked up on stage it would sound great I bet.

But when I plug in the 4x12 to A/B them it's just no contest. I never expected the same thing but the 4x12 just sounds too good I guess.

I think 2x12 are better suited on the floor, where the high end isn't blasting close to ear level? Have you tried in on its own on the floor?

You know I mentioned that to my band mates as well. Have not tried. I will next practice for sure.

That is the way I feel. Most cabs, even 4x12's, need to be on the floor, or close, to sound their best and provide the punch. Sitting on another cab, etc.. they lose alot of their punch IMO.

Put that Mills 2x12 on the floor and stand back 10-15 feet and I bet it will sound killer.

Will report back on this.

Dibs...

Please???

If I do sell, crownedblasphemy has first dibs. You'd be next but I do have more testing to do before I can decide.

Thanks for considering me.

Of course 4x12's sound better. I'm not found of hauling them around to gigs anymore though. Once you slap a mike on a speaker, the difference in tone isn't enough to make me wanna cram my 4x12 into the trunk of my Honda twice just for a show. Believe me, if loading them in and out wasn't such a pain, I'd gig with two 4x12's.

I play a Reeves 2x12, which is ported. Pretty darn close to a 4x12 in terms of sonic footprint.

I love my 412's but I also love my splawn 212, and on the floor that cab has tons of low end, but it sure is much easier to move around. Low end is a good thing, but guitar is a mid frequency instrument and 212's shine here

Yeah that is for sure and I'm going to put it on the floor next time.

We don't have a bassist so I'm used to providing the low end myself as well.

So I put the cab on the floor and couldn't believe what a difference it made. Sounds really good now and I am just a huge noob.

Did a quick pedal test. Maxon 808 vs Suhr Koko boost. Both the boost level and mid frequency were set pretty low on the Suhr. I kind of want to redo it with more boost because the video doesn't do any justice imo. Sounds less gainy than normal.

Oh well, here is the 2x12 on the floor through an iphone. Video starts with the Maxon on and it is in a glorious 240p.
