So today i went and picked up my new guitar in London. Put it on hold earlier this week and had arranged to stop by the shop to collect it today!

Its a 1978 LP Custom (Maple neck, 1 piece Mahogany body with 3 piece maple top, NOT a sandwich body). I swapped the pickup rings out for black ones and i still have those cream Dimarzio's (old 70's ones) in there which read about 8.00kOhms on the DMM (PAF style). The sound is just mindblowing! Think tones such as John Sykes, Doug Aldrich, John Norum etc.

Im glad i didnt buy into the bullshit that Norlin's arent as good as the others, because this is the best one i have heard yet out of all the LP's i have played (ranging from 70's to Custom Shop VOS's). Wouldnt have bought it if it wasnt! It plays extremely easy too, as the neck is like a 60s profile.

Needs a refret in a bad way though, its like playing a fretless haha! :D   Once it has 6100's on it, its gonna play like butter!!!

So you finally found one! Congrats, Dan! Be sure to make clips with it! :2thumbsup:

I have been admiring the clip too. Have to say I love Walken's look on his face as in just like taken care of business.

Oh and Dan that is a very sweet lookin LP. I bought one, then another, then another, then another and I think you know how the story goes ;)

My custom got refret to 6100's a few years ago and my standard is in need of one now. Got any other plans for it other than the refret?

Yeah i know, i already have GAS for more Customs :D

Yeah it will be fitted with 6100's like yours, and i also want a new nut fitted too. Other than that, i may buy a Suhr Aldrich bridge humbucker, but the neck humbucker in this guitar is nice enough to leave in  Sounds so smooth with the tone pot rolled back!!!

:inlove:  Wish I could play those damn things. I love the way thy look! Congrats!

Awesome man! Glad you picked it up!!! Are you sure the body is 1 piece mahogany or could it be a few pieces?

Well im pretty sure, as there's no seam line break in the paint on the edge for starters.. and also because when i held one side of the body up in the light, you can sorta see thru the paint a bit.. and there's no line in the middle like a sandwich body would show.

Also i spoke to a guy who plays late 70's LPC's and he said from 78 til 85 they stopped using sandwich bodys and used 1 piece instead :)

It must weigh like 10.5-11lbs.. its a heavy sumbitch :D

Cheers Steve!

I had to learn how to play LP's.. i came from a background of using Jacksons/Charvels so you know how it is! But i can adapt to using an LP aswell as the Charvels because im lucky to have pretty long fingers.. so i hold the LP neck like a classical guitar, thumb on the back

Sweet guitar. I need to get my LP custom in for a refret too....

Does that guitar sound super thick and chunky?

Oh, I believe ya it's not a "sandwich" body, but alot of les pauls still have multiple pieces of mahogany that make up the back. Not put together in the "sandwich" or "pancake" way, but still 2-3 pieces.

I honestly don't know if Gibson went to solid 1 piece mahogany bodies in the '70s after they stopped doing the pancake thing.

And either way, it doesn't matter! Just trying to learn. :)

Oh no sweat, i honestly dont know either haha! im just going by what some guy told me.. which could easily be untrue :D

I need to learn more about these too, i only know the basics really with these older LPC's :)

Thick and chunky is an understatement :D Think John Sykes neck pickup tone.. that explains it all

So how do you tell if the guitar has a sandwiched body? I looked at my 73 LP custom and I see on the edge of the guitar, that it looks like 2 pieces, I assume this is the dreaded sandwich body. Oh the shame.... :D
