I just redid a pair of guitars. CHEAP!

The new project is done with the exception of the electronics to come in for a short bit, but patience is rewarded, especially with the custom winds being done in a few weeks.

This is an early 2000's Peavey Korean EXP. I got it from my good ole Craigslist for $120 and damn I am thrilled!! It came with a Hipshot bridge and Grover tuners and was dirty as hell. I gave it a thorough cleaning (emphasis on thorough), crowned the frets, and used some Frine to get them like mirrors. Actually used the Fret Guru file on them for a change most of the wear was on the first five frets, but it wasn't in bad shape at all. I used some really fine cut rubbing compound on the body and headstock then cleaned with Music Nomad Guitar Detailer and she is nice and shiny. I set it up nicely and this is how she is right now! Nut will be posted soon.

THE SECOND...

Here it is, done with the mods! This is an ibanez 6003FM that i snagged for $170, it had the stainless steel saddles. The nut was terrible so i cut a new one out of elk bone, i crowned the frets, and set it up.

I installed SD invaders, (which i bought the pair for $40) it was hard to make them work and i was determined to get them to work. i screwed around with component values to get them to work and ended up with 1M ohm pots, a .001uF treble bleed and a .047uF PIO NOS Rusian K42-Y cap. It screams perfectly i roll the tone back just a hair, leads are liquid smooth and the bridge has nice bite and awesome attack.

For anybody wanting to get solid results out of invaders, 1M ohm pots are the way to go. the treble bleed is just a preference thing for me, also i tested some different caps, and i found the e.047uF to be ideal.

The guitar plays and sounds great, but it definitely needed love as far as the frets and the factory nut. so if you can do the work, this is a helluva solid guitar that i only have the following costs into:

Guitar $170
Pickups $40
Pots $10
Cap $2*
Switch $12
Blank Nut $2**

$236 in total.

*I use the NOS PIO Russian caps, opinions differ regarding that. i like them a lot and like the feel and the rollback. I get them cheap because I buy between 50 and 100 at a time from Ukraine, normally probably $5-$10 for one domestic. they take about six weeks to get them from Ukraine but they are cheap and always test in spec. Many use orange drops or even ceramic. i like PIO better.
**If you can't cut a nut, its going to cost substantially more, I just get elk longbone rough cut blanks. The ibanez nut was garbage.
