Pretty sweet score today! A rare Peavey Wolfgang Prototype (?) in near new condish with not a blemish to be found. These were amongst the few hundred getting submitted to Lord Halen himself, Peavey was going the extra mile with them to ensure he'd be satisfied. Lots of nice little touches to distinguish them from the regular production line, like better wood for the back, top and neck, supposedly better hardware including the floyd, etc. Also has some visual differences like a deeper scoop on the headstock, no "TM" or "R" after the EVH and Wolfgang logo's, different bolt on position for the neck, etc. Don't know how much of that is legit and how much is internet lore (I'm no Wolfgang historian lol), but they do seem highly regarded with Wolfgang collectors. Eh, anyway, the thing plays like a shredders wet dream with really low and fast action with no buzzies, has amazing tone and looks sexy. The "collectable" stuff is nice, but I've gots me a great new studio toy to record with - all I really care about, lol! :D

i know it couldnt have been eddies directly, he never liked arch-tops and only plays flat tops.

regardless - nice minty wolfy youve got there. happy NGD

Nice wolfie but I'm not seeing anything rare about...Just a nice gold top wolfie. It's definately from the first run of the gold tops (77XX serial #) but I don't see anything special about it other than the previous owner changed out the plastic from black to white  Also a lot of the 1st year guitars had a deeper scoop on the headstock. I hope you didn't pay extra for a supposed prototype...Not trying to be a jerk; just saying.

Oh yeah, definitely not suggesting that - just that the "prototypes" were just that, models getting submitted for approval for the main line, nothing more. But they are clearly a bit different than the production stuff and for that, it's kinda cool.

About the feel and play of it...I was a little turned off at first, it did not play as well as my personal guitars which are really setup for the kill, smooth feeling necks with low action (sans buzz) and floating trems. Thing was, I KNEW it was not setup well, the guy was a much older man and did not play it much, in fact, he owned two other Wolfgangs and I got the impression his wife was making him sell this one since it was "played the least yet cost him the most", lol. I read here and elsewhere that Wolfgangs can be setup for really low, smooth action so I gambled and bought it. Took me most of the day today to set it up to my tastes, including the angle of the bridge, tuning to Eb in stead of E and then re-doing the intonation, etc. But oh man, I LOVE it now!!!

Thanks for that slice of info, Stramm8. I'm not sure how I could verify if it's a prototype, that's why I made sure I mentioned "Don't know how much of that is legit and how much is internet lore (I'm no Wolfgang historian lol)." I've read the logo thing is supposedly an indicator, but then again, now you're making me think that was just common on all early, low serial models and not necessarily on prototypes. I guess I could call Peavey to be sure one way or the other. But I hear ya, I did not over pay for this, pretty much paid right in line with what a Standard Deluxe would go for.

None of the early production wolfgangs had the "TM" next to the "EVH". The goldtops came out during the first year of production; I know..I bought one back in '97. Here's a link to a first year quilt top: https://cgi.ebay.com/USA-PEAVEY-EVH-VAN- ... 3f09b012d7
scroll down to the pic of the headstock...All of the stuff they say on some of these sites are total bullshit...There are some prototypes floating around here and there but most of those aren't really that special. You have a very nice, near mint early production run wg goldtop

Yeah, I see that ^^ Your post just beat mine as I was editing! Thanks again for the help. It is kina cool to have a pre-trademarked Wolfie though!

Absolutely!! I am definately of the opinion that the earlier ones play and sound a little better. When they first came out they had all kinds of delays due to Ed not being a 100% happy with them which led to them trickling out to dealers. If all of that was really true my guess is peavey paid special attention to the quality and set ups on the early guitars so hang on to that one

Really quite a beautiful guitar, am developing an interest in goldtops as well as wolfgangs lately...LOL

I had a patent pending goldtop Wolfie Standard Deluxe that had a very early SN (pre 2500). Killer axes for sure, I will own another some day.

Thanks, all! I removed the white knobs and toggle piece, replaced them with black, looks less vintagey now but somehow adds more mojo. ;)

Really short sample clip:

Wolfgang Sample / Download

And just for a comparison, the same thing (plus a few more staple Halen riffs) with the Charvale (Super Distortion).

Charvel Sample / Download

No amp settings changed, just wanted a raw comparison, guitar/pickups vs guitar/pickups. I think the Wolfgang sounds a bit thicker, more growl. I guess I'll like them both for different reasons/applications though, lol!

nice guitar man ... seeing these pics makes me regret getting rid of mine. i have to ship it out monday :aww:

Eddie never plays the archtop?? Isn't his main EVH Wolfgang model an archtop?
