My new '84 Silverburst came in the other day. Did a quick setup (it arrived with no strings and the bridge/tailpiece off). And wow! It sounds MUCH different from my '79. Everything about this guitar is different — from the way it plays, to the neck angle, neck material, the weight, the top carve, the pickups, and etc. The binding on the neck has shrunk over time so it sort of feels "sharp." Almost like the neck is thinner. The neck angle is also much greater.
My '79 is almost flat. It has a flatter top (less of a carve) and the neck is mounted more flat. Whereas this '84's neck is crazy angled and the top is carved much deeper
Tim Shaw pickups are cool. Debating how long I should wait before throwing the BK Black Dogs in. Pinch harmonics LEAP from this guitar and I can literally make a note sound like I'm sweeping a wah pedal by hitting a few pinch harmonics in different places.
Frets are super low. Thanks Gibson.
I'll have to have a tech do a proper setup. I got my '79 back from Mark Balash at Berkley Music, here in Detroit and he did a great job. So I'll bring this one to him as well.
The mahogany neck also gives this one more meat in the low-mids. It's got a beefier sound. But it's also a little less tight compared to my maple-necked '79.
Overall, I'm happy! Ok, on to the new rig pick.
