My new '84 Silverburst came in the other day. Did a quick setup (it arrived with no strings and the bridge/tailpiece off). And wow! It sounds MUCH different from my '79. Everything about this guitar is different — from the way it plays, to the neck angle, neck material, the weight, the top carve, the pickups, and etc. The binding on the neck has shrunk over time so it sort of feels "sharp." Almost like the neck is thinner. The neck angle is also much greater.

My '79 is almost flat. It has a flatter top (less of a carve) and the neck is mounted more flat. Whereas this '84's neck is crazy angled and the top is carved much deeper

Tim Shaw pickups are cool. Debating how long I should wait before throwing the BK Black Dogs in. Pinch harmonics LEAP from this guitar and I can literally make a note sound like I'm sweeping a wah pedal by hitting a few pinch harmonics in different places.

Frets are super low. Thanks Gibson. :( I'll have to have a tech do a proper setup. I got my '79 back from Mark Balash at Berkley Music, here in Detroit and he did a great job. So I'll bring this one to him as well.

The mahogany neck also gives this one more meat in the low-mids. It's got a beefier sound. But it's also a little less tight compared to my maple-necked '79.

Overall, I'm happy! Ok, on to the new rig pick. :D

Don't "fret"... get some stainless steel frets put in and don't look back. Jim Crawford did my Les Paul and now my first guitar competes with my Andersons. Just a suggestion...It's all personal preference but I an't going back...

Yeah, I'm contemplating getting both guitars refretted. Just gotta do some research about what kind of frets, what size, etc.

nice!
looks even nicer than the 79, in my opinion
I love the yellow aging effect and specially the deeper burst edge

the dog should be a great improvement over the shaw
I had a stock '81 gibson lp standard and my '78 greco lp standard puts it to shame tonewise, thanks to the black dog
I answered to your post about pickups on diezel forum earlier today, by the way

Jumbos baby! There's nothing better on a Les Paul. Dunlop 2100s would be great, or their stainless steel counterparts.

Which guitar in your photo is the '84? I dig the looks of the one on the right.

I was thinking stainless steel. But probably not jumbos. And probably not Dunlop. I've heard good things about Jescar 6105.

One on the left is the '79. For some reason the '84 aged more. In person, it's a bit more snot-green. :D And the '79 has a little bit more gold/amber in it at certain angles. But I color graded the photo so it's not 100% accurate to real life.

Sick guitar!!!
Man... A Les Paul custom with stainless frets would be sick!!!
Oh man.. I'm feeling gas pain starting to come on..

Wow dude, you've got an AWESOME rig and some AWESOME guitars. You're an envied man!

Nice!! I guess there is only one thing better than having a Silverburst....

Sick dude, I dig the 84 more only because the burst is smaller.
That is huge man! Let me know if you get sick of it and want a Natural top LPC for it :)
