OK guys, long story shortened out, if you need any clarification just ask. Bought this guitar 2 months ago thinking it was a prototype, returned it within an hour of opening the box without thinking about it(stupid I know) Mentioned I had some concerns about the authenticity at the point of return. Followed through with some research after I returned it and knew immediately I made a mistake. Tried to buy it back the next day but was told it was being sent to gc's corporate office to be authenticated through their counterfeit dept. Only way the guitar would be seen again is if they were 100% sure it was real.

Well, the guitar came back and I snatched it up for a crazy deal. And now the fun begins. I've been trolling through hundreds of pics trying to figure out if it really is a pre production/prototype guitar(btw, reason for thinking this is no,serial number but still stamped with evh sig and pat pend and some slight differences only seen on proto's and early production models...plus the monster quilt you never see on wolfgangs)

After nearly giving up I decide to set the guitar up and look into the Peavey wolfgang owners manual for the setup tips. At this point I've accepted it as a very special wolfgang that I may never be able to fully validate. Then I flip to page 14 and there it is...starring me right in the face. Now I cant be 100% sure until I speak with Peavey but Im asking you guys for some help. As we all know, quilt tops are like a unique signature for a guitar,no 2 will ever be alike in any way. The first picture is the picture from the Peavey manual. Take note in the area between the pups, the unique "lip" type shape. I know the picture is a little blurry but you can see that part pretty well. Im hoping when I contact peavey they will be able to find a color photo in their archives. All the subsequent Pictures are of my Wolfgang.

You guys tell me what you think. Keep in mind the manual was obviously done before the line was released in 96 which would place this guitar being made before the production line first year quilts. I was going to try and curb my excitement and keep this under wraps until I was 100% sure but I think the photos speak for themselves

apart from the "lips" (you gotta call it the RS peavey surely) there are also a few other standout quilt patterns (just above the floyd, below the curve between PUps, above tone pot towards back of guitar) that make me think that yes it is the same guitar

Really hard to tell from that small picture, but the bottom of the lip continues all the way across the guitar in the blurry pic and it doesn't on your guitar. From that, I'd say they are similar, but not the same guitar, but with how blurry the original picture is, I could totally be wrong. Either way though - killer guitar!

yea, Its a little tough with the blurry pic plus light/angle plays a big factor in how the quilt is going to looks. But there are a few similarities in certain parts that you usually just dont see. Like I said, Im hoping Peavey will have or will be able to point me in the right direction about finding the original picture. Even if it turns out that its not the guitar pictured, I've still got a very special piece for any evh collector, a non serialized first year quilt

For sure! As I said, it looks awesome!

hard to tell but from what I see I think those tops are from the same tree/log but not the same guitar. Better photos would help. Still that is a KILLER first year quilt...one of if not the best I've seen.

Gaaaah!!! I saw this on the GC site and was telling my friend to front me the cash!! Lol!! What a deal!! I'm completely envious... If you guys knew what he got it for, the collective jaw drop would be heard around the world...

Thats another possibility too that I didnt think of, kind of like when they buy a block of maple and cut it into the "book match" sides, this could be the sister or mirror side from the one. Either way it goes, its eerily close

Whatever it is, it's killer!! The best top I've ever seen on one of these and I had a red, very low serial number quilt top years ago. Sweet!!

I think it HAS to be the same guitar, there are too many EXACT same curls and patterns. Too bad Peavey couldn't afford to use color shots in their manuals!? Did they photo copy all of them?

Hope they kept a record of which guitar they used in the manual, etc. Otherwise, you have a rare pink Wolfie quilt - enjoy!

The story is not complete without knowing how much you paid for it!

Great score!

Hard to tell with the lighting, but I'd have to say similar, but not the same guitar; again, hard to say from that pic, but I see a very distinctive open arrowhead/inverted V shape (adjacent to the dtuna) that doesn't appear to be present on your guitar. A couple of other apparent differences as well, but again, could be the pic.

Any way you slice it, you seem to have scored an awesome guitar, for (apparently) a great price!

Congrats!

I would say 100% it's the same guitar. Whenever you hold up quilts to lights, they swirl and change. There are way too many similar angles, etc. for them not to be.

Congrats! GREAT guitars - I regret getting rid of my American Special everyday - one of the best guitars I've ever put my hands around.

IMHO, the Peavey Wolfs are much more to my liking than the newer Fenders.

Great score!!!

I agree with you, Quilts can look different depending on the light but there are too many common area's between the 2 and a few very specific patterns if you look very close that are the same. I tried to call chris goodwin at Peavey yesterday but he is out until thursday. Im really hope they have some record of the guitar in the picture. If it is the same guitar and they have a record then I can hopefully track the history of the guitar. Either way, this Wolfgang is going no where lol

well, I sent a bunch of pics to Peavey last week and heard back from them the other day. The tech I sent the pics to showed them around to some of the original techs who worked on the wolfgangs and the consensus is dun dun dun... It IS one of their prototypes! Scored the wolfgang of a lifetime

What a great story!!! Thanks for sharing the joy!!!

To play devils advocate, maybe they used photoflame early on and they all had the same pattern.
