Ever just arrive at a venue, and you just know it is going to be a nightmare?

So we get there, and go inside and introduce ourselves to the soundguy as the promoter hasn't shown up (good start). The soundguy was really cool and apologetic, and told us just to bring in our stuff as we are on second out of three bands. Immediately I was confused three bands? I asked what happened to the fourth and apparently they broke up the day before, turns out they were the band who I had been talking to on the phone and arranged a drum kit share (GOD DAMN), they didnt bother to phone me or even send an email!

So we went to see the other bands, the other support act were told they were playing the gig the night before, when the other support act dropped out, not the ones that broke up, the OTHER band. So just as this is happening the headlining band shows up, two cars a massive van, and out gets 4, 30-40 something guys, and I kid you not i thought the lead singer was zakk wylde! They proceeded to unload their stuff and blanked all of us, including when I actually said to them only a couple of feet away 'Hi, guys need any help?' they just walked on past, ignoring us

Whilst this is going on we are desperately deciding what we are going to do about a kit, (the rest of our drummers was over an hours away) luckily the new first band on were really helpful, and their drummer drove home and got some of his kit so we had a full one.

So the gig is about to start, and it turns out our band was the only one that sold tickets, so we played and the first band to 14 of our friends. And during this the headliners sat outside and ate chinese, no support whatsoever! After this I was pretty fed up, so we cleared the stage for the headliners and packed our cars. Watched one song of the Black label society tribute band and left them to play to about 6 people.

What did I learn? Always bring a whole drum kit, and try and find out ahead of time about the kind of bands we are playing with. Sorry for the rant, but I am mega pissed right now.

BLS Tribute band   man I like Zakk but a tribute band to them WTF

AAAAAARRRGGGGG, I hate stuff like that. We had a gig in an armory, when we got there, we could see there was not anywhere near enough voltage to run our stuff, so we had to pull the cover on the panel and come straight off the main leads to our own pwr distribution ctr. It used to take us 4.5-5 hours to set up and get a soundcheck. 30 minuites before the show, the fire marshall shows up, and says we cant run that way, it is unsafe because of the exposed leads. We had to play with a quarter of our PA, and less than half of our lighting system, and still spent the night fighting the breakers  We learned a lot that night

The only thing worse than a band with an ego is a local band with an ego. Even worse, a tribute band with an ego  .

They werent actually a tribute band, but they sounded exactly the same, even dressed, same guitars differant amps though a Krank rev1 and a triple rec.

On a good note though the venue was really cool, great PA and monitors, and we got booked for another gig.

Unfortunately as they were all huge, no one could say anything lol.

I'm racking my brain right now to think of a GOOD gig story/experience that I've ever had...

Let me think...

hmm.....

Well, last week, we performed well, but the stage was so small the kick drum was practically up my asshole, and the soundguy couldn't figure out how to make the monitors work, and the microphone smelled like a septic tank, and the other bands on the ticket were metalcore or emo and didn't like us at all...

Oh wait, that's another bad experience...

HAHA, where'd you play at? Sounds like a bar in LBI i used to play called Nardes. The stage was soo small i had to put my cab off to the side of the stage.

But as far as nightmare gigs, damm, there's been a lot. The REAL nightmare gigs were usually girl related though like when 2 of them show up on the same night

Or how about when your singer gets arrested on his way to the gig and your on stage in front of 200 people with no singer! Good thing we knew instrumentals that night.

My band tends to have a fair few female fans...if you will... and they don't go down well when my GF is at gigs with me.

I don't even do anything, if one of the girls at the gig does as little as talks to me I'm in trouble.

That sucks...I hate it when I have to deal with another band's collective ego.

We (Smash Moon) headlined a gig at Bonnie's Roxx in southern NJ back in the early 90's. The band before us was some rock/punk act from NYC...they looked like a little pack of Johnny Thunders/Steve Stevens wannabes :D As I head into the dressing room, they are already in there doing their Aquanet thing and try to inform me that they aren't sharing the room (recall that we are the headliners!!!). I told them something explicit (I don't exactly recall what I said) and one of came over to try and physically remove me. After shedding him like a bug, I started throwing their shit out the door into the club and was quickly joined by my drummer who did the same   . Management quickly jumped in and booted them from the club.

What could have been a cool show for them (the crowd was great) turned into a wasted drive from NYC all because these little cockroaches had rock-star egos for no good reason.

Better luck next time...very cool that you got invited back!

the Tribute Band thing has gotten way outa hand.

That said if I looked like EVH I'd definitely be looking for a Van Halen Trib band!

Word of advice, always bring your own mic. You never know who was spitting all over the house ones.

I hate it even more when it is totally misplaced. If I was playing a show with a big band, and they had massive ego's I can understand that. But when you are a two bit boring BLS rip off band then you need to get real.

It's easy to be Zakk Wylde. Don't shave or take a shower for a month, bleach your hair a little, and go to a trailer park and see if they have a Red Cross clothes bin to see what unwanted garments you can grab.

I usually do, and I did... but I TOTALLY forgot to set it up that night... I realized it halfway thru the first song when I thought to myself "what the f*ck is that smell?"

:bleh:

Doesn't someone sell something for that skank mic smell? Besides Lysol!? :bleh:
