Man! Talk about a wormhole! Lol. Was looking around the usual haunts and found this fairly minty BAE 312A for a killer price.

I have to say, it has a LOT of output. And also, it’s nice to see this shit ain’t snake oil! Could instantly hear a difference between the Tonelux and the BAE. Not on any kind of bad way, just the different color.

I have a couple amp demos I’m working on this weekend so can’t wait to really test these out and see what fits what the best. I’ll tell you, both the Tonelux and BAE are really nice with the Torpedo Studio.

nice!! they make a two space little lunchbox thing with these i was looking at.

I have the original BAE 312 mic preamp where they used the old API components out of an API mixer. I love it. I also have one of the Classic API clones of it. There is a large difference between them with the original sounding much better.

Yeah I’ve no experience with these previously but I dig it.

Good stuff. Not really a fan of API on guitars personally, but I absolutely would love an API for bass like yesterday! Looks killer.

What I prefer about the API mic pres on guitars versus the Neve 1073's is the immediacy and in your face character, the percussive thump of them and the articulation. The Neve's make everything warmer and fatter but I feel like they make the attack on electric guitars a little softer, a little smoother, less immediacy, less articulation, less in your face.

I definitely can see where many people would prefer the 1073 type mic pres on guitars depending on the vibe of the music but for what I want to hear, it is always an API over a Neve.

I need to do an A/B on the 312A and the Tonelux units I have. I LOVE them on guitar.

Yea I for sure agree with you about the API’s. To me in a mix though, they just seem to provide a lot of extra stuff you don’t need. They sound unfinished and not ready and a lot of extra stuff going on. For sure sound huge, which is why I think people like them on toms and bass no doubt! The neve stuff just sounds right and ready to go in a mix almost right off the bat to me. I’ve never had a problem getting what I want for attack and articulation out of the neve stuff, no matter how heavy the tones are, but I kind of do want another one to play with overall, and I can see why someone would feel that way about the API’s.

BAE makes quality stuff! I have had an old pair with the original, vintage API 312 cards. Can't remember the transformers in mine. At any rate, they sound great. I really like them on acoustic, clean guitar and bass. Neves nor API's are "better". Depends on what you want. That's like saying a les Paul is better than a strat. Better for some stuff, sure. Not as good for others. They're all just different crayons in the box. The trick is to know when to use what.

Yeah man totally agree here. I rarely subscribe to the “best” way of thinking.
