"No gain" hands? What am I doing wrong?

I came across this video today and I can't figure out how this guy gets so much gain out of his amps. I have the same BE50 amp and I can't get the amount of gain this guy has, even if I put the HBE on 10 and the SAT switch on. This guy has the gain on 7 and the SAT is disengaged. I'm using a Strat with a Pegasus in the bridge, so what am I missing? Is it my parts inside my Strat? I have 5 tremolo springs in the cavity. What else am I missing? This is frustrating.

Are you playing hard?
Is your action high enough the strings can ring loudly without getting choked out?
Is the pickup adjusted to the right distance from your strings?
Are you using really thin picks or ones that you can dig in with?

In addition to @skoora's point about the boost, are you using different speakers/a different cab? I've found certain cabs/speakers seem to thicken things up. E.g., I played a Rocker 15 terror into an orange 1x12 with V30 and a Marshall 4x12 probably with T75's, and the amp sounded like it had much less gain through the 4x12.

that vid is what sold me on getting the Runt 50 .....

with or without a boost I couldn't get the thing to " Bite " and it went back to GC within a week

I use 2 greenbacks in a Mesa 2 x 12 recto cab.
