Brad, there's nothing wrong with Ed. Ed's a good guy and will take good care of you if you know what you want in a custom guitar.

Have you ever met Ed, Brad?

You're joking, right?

[Not very "Jackson-ish". I'd also like to buy from someone who might actually APPRECIATE my business... ;)
Ed receives more than 500 calls every day from guys that just want to pick at his knowledge and waste his time. If you are a client/customer of Ed he will go out of his way to satisfy your guitar needs, to no end. Otherwise, it's just a waste of his time. And I can fully appreciate and understand that.

When you want his time, its best if you have done your due diligence.

PRS has its reputation of being bought by doctors and lawyers for a reason.
Simple - they don’t play it. They hang it on the wall and speak about it at their cork sniffing parties.

I've owned 7 PRS guitars over the years and aside from the esthetic value, the underlying build quality is mediocre at best.

I've been on various guitar forums for a long long time and I believe you are the only guy that has had a positive experience with Ed. Thats cool, but I can't recommend him.

I did meet Ed back at his CT store and again at a few guitar shows. I stand by, not so much...

$7000 must have been list price, no? Still waaay too expensive, though.

Thats what I thought until I asked him and he said no that was the price out of my pocket.
There has to be some mistake here. There is no way that what you described should be $7K street...

Ed got me good during the ECMM days when I was buying my first "real" guitar.

7k is ridiculous for something that really can't be that hard for them. Soloist body, they make those... reverse headstock neck...yep. Floyd and duncans, standard on the soloist... 1 volume, no tone = less work. Cross inlays, sure some upcharge there, same with the granite finish but no way is that *that* custom IMO. I got my SL2H for $1142 new out the door in jan '03 and there's just not THAT much different between that guitar and what you want. Honestly, your best bet is probably to find a pre-made custom shop one that you like and have it modified if you really want it exactly as you like. Even just browsing the ones they have on guitar asylum right now there's some on there that look pretty nice, lol. For 7k I'd expect it to be them making my own design/custom shaped body of incredible woods and finishes etc, not something that's basically something they do anyways besides inlays.

That's unfair, PRSs are excellent guitars - go over to birdsandmoons.com and check out all the live shots and videos of those guys playing everything from the cheapest SE to the most decadent Dragon or Private Stock. I won't get into a flame war, but if you're telling me that a Quicksilver made by that used car salesman is better than all 7 PRSs you've played, I'm inclined to believe you either are ED or work for Ed or played a bunch of PRSs he wanted you to play before you picked up a Quicksilver. I bet the guy builds a pretty decent guitar, but if they were really as excellent as the three Roman supporters I've ever encountered on the forums said they were, he wouldn't need to trash other brands to sell 'em. It seems to me he's got sour grapes because PRS won't open him as a dealer...

My (underdeveloped) point was that there's a different aesthetic to a PRS than a Jackson - with a PRS, you're looking at visually stunning woods vs. relatively common woods covered by a solid finish. And the one with the solid finish is somehow twice the price. PRSs also have proprietary pickups, carved tops, etc. Also, my dr/lawyer comment speaks to a different type of player for each brand. When I think Jackson, I think of a more workmanlike player - someone like Mark Morton from Lamb of God. When I think PRS, I'm thinking of someone closer to Al DiMeola or Santana. I don't think it's unreasonable to assume there's a gap in the income level of the players influenced by those two types of players. Really, I'm comparing apples and oranges, but they should at least be competitively priced apples and oranges...

No

You're being childish, and your impression of PRS guitars is off the mark. PRS makes great guitars, they're just not for everyone. I've yet to see one that was driftwood or poorly made.

And you're the ONLY one I've seen in 10 years to defend ER. Every person I've known to have contact with him has had a bad experience. Every person.

You're either A. ER himself, B. a buddy/schill, or C. incredibly lucky.

Guys from what I am being told it has something to do with the finish. Back when they did the finish originally it was a $300-500 upgrade, but I guess now from what I am hearing it's around a $2000 finish plus it costs more for the cross inlays.

It figures King Crimson would be giving the thumbs up to Ed Roman.

I can see the inlays being an upcharge but 2000 for the granite finish??? LMAO. You could easily get someone to finish it for way less than that, I want some of what they're smoking

having said that,I think that whoever at the factory that sent that quote should go to jail and do time  :bash:

My exact thought. It's almost as if they don't want the work. They couldn't be that busy. Heck, there are dozens of custom shop builders that will build exactly what you want without that kind of price tag (K-Line, Anderson, Suhr, etc).
..................................................................exactly...I know a guy in Pitts. PA who will do basically anything you want to an existing guitar...he's the best in our area....heck, ive been looking for a soloist in "Nestles Crunch" paint scheme for probably 8 years now...and if it costs 7k to get that on a soloist, well, like I said, those guys who quoted that price need to do time and think about what theyre doin to us.....
