NOGD (Soonish) Question Though

Back in High School, I needed rent money badly after someone stole my wallet which I stupidly left my rent check in (I was 17-whoops). Long story short, I had to sell my first real guitar; a Highway One Tele to my Guidance Counselor. Wicked nice guy and I've hung with him a couple of times outside of it (went to see Rush during the Time Machine Tour).

I haven't spoken with him in a while but I called him up yesterday and we talked for a bit. He was always insistent on giving me my guitar back. I never thought that would be fair since he bought it from me but he said he wanted to.

Let me ask you guys this though.

I bought the guitar after working my butt off but I don't want to just take something back. I'm not an Indian giver.

What would y'all deem fair?

I know he's adamant about it but I feel bad. Then again, I have a lot of memories of that Tele (first gig, etc.).

Honestly, if he really wants you to have it back, you should take it to avoid hurt feelings.

Just get him a $50 gift card to Home Depot, and another card for a restaurant so he can take his girl out next weekend.

That's not a bad idea.

I know he has a couple of guitars and basses that could use some TLC. I was thinking of fixing/replacing whatever he wants in his gear.

I just feel weird but at the same time, ecstatic as I thought I'd never see this guitar again. I sold it five years ago and haven't played it in four

Sorry, I think I'm funny today, but I'm really not. hehe Anyways, um YES take it back. Buy him a beer and call it a day. He sounds like a coold dude, and you being all wierd about it kind of takes something away from what he's trying to do. Just make sure that he's actually offering, and that you're not "pushing" him to offer it back to you. It's hard to know the difference sometimes when it's something you really want. It's like when I want to buy something, ask the wifey, and she replies, "do whatever you want!" I take that to mean that she actually WANTS me to buy it, when in reality......... well you know what I'm getting at.

Believe me man, he's been offering since I graduated HS! I start the conversation like, hey what's up how are the kids and he goes, I want to give you your Tele back I feel bad.

I haven't thought about it since I sold it because I was cash strapped and don't like going back that route.

I just don't like taking things without giving something in return. Since I'm seeing him around Christmas (well, Jan 2nd) I'm gonna get him a gift and fix up some of his gear. He just bought a Geddy Lee bass that needs some work.

I would take it, as the guy wants to give it back to you and it would make him very happy to see you with it again. I like the idea of offering to give the guys instruments some TLC, but if he doesn't accept than pay it forward when the next time you encounter a struggling student/musician.

It's a weird concept of taking something for free, were so conditioned to give and that taking is bad. I remember hearing a guy talking once that whenever he went out for dinner with his friends he always picked up the bill, until one of his friend stopped him one time and told him not to be so greedy and let other people have the pleasure of giving.

Think of it this way, by not taking the guitar back, you are denying him the pleasure and satisfaction of doing something completely awesome.

Honor his wishes and offer him some repairs on his guitars or get him a gift certicate at Guitar Center or another guitar shop. One could always use strings, picks, a tab or lesson book, or even a cool pedal.

Don't know.

It's an 04' MIM Highway One Tele. A lot of the guys on the TDPRI think that anything pre 05' for the HW1 is the cat's meow.

I payed $450 new for it back in 2008-2009 (either Sophomore/Junior year).
