Noise gate pedal question....

I'm in a band (dead horse) that does a LOT of stop/starts. I normally use my channel switch on my Boogie .50Cal+to do quick stops... It really is a pain in the ass. I've got an old Hush "The Pedal", it's the older two button model. It works OK, but the input outputs are on the wrong side. I'm not about to use rack gear, so my question is, what's better than my Hush pedal? The newer 1. Rocktron guitar silencer pedal 2. The ICP Decimator 3. or the old tried and true Boss NS-2?

I've heard the NS-2 is good for stop-starts but for all-around noise reduction the ISP is the class of the field. Haven't heard anything about the Rocktron. You also may want to try the new MXR Noise Clamp. I heard it's made for that specific stop-start type of playing and it's well-priced.

Cheers,

ISP will definitely do it
I have a MXR Smart Gate that takes care of business also, they are a bit cheaper.

yeah that Hush is useless for what you are wanting.

just get a NS-2 or Decimator. The Decimator will be a little more easier to dial (1-knob) the NS-2 gives you slightly more flexibility (2Knobs). NS-2 slightly colors your tone, Decimator colors it slightly less.

I have the NS-2 and its doing ok... but Im tryin to get an ISP asap. To see the master at work there is an old youtube video of the three guitarists from Periphery going over their rig and Misha was running both the NS2 and the ISP at the same time thru his old ENGL... very informative check it out

jesus christ a compressor fighting two noise gates.......wtffffffffff?

I'm sure it's a tad more simple now that he/they are running the Axe but wow.

I had the NS-2 and found it to alter the tone a bit. probably due to the builtin buffer that it has. But it did the job very well.

I switched to the ISP Decimator G-string and never looked back at another noise gate. I use a Splawn Nitro for my Amp.

I own a "standard" Decimator, not the G String one, it does perfectly its job, set up exact at noon I can't hear any tone alteration. But my hears are sh!t :D

I forgot to ad that I do not like to use the fx loop on my Boogie, it colors the sound in a bad blanket over the speakers way, so the pedal has to be going out front.

i run my mxr in front of my boogie...works great for me.
i've done the same with the standard decimator as well.

The decimator can handle it. You just need to run it with at least another pedal. Using just the ISP will cause your amp to squeel. I have confirmed this with three different amps, guitars. cables. The pedal needs another pedal as a buffer.

About 2 years ago, I bought 5 gates from MF to try out with the intention of keeping the one I liked best. Rocktron hush, ISP decimator g-string, boss ns-2, mxr smart gate, and the regular isp decimator. Before I did this, Id used NS-2s in the past for about 5 years, while I had my blue voodoo halfstack. At the end of that experiment, I ended up keeping the ns-2. The g-string was the second choice, for me. You can run the g-string and ns-2 up front and in the loop, which is the selling point for me. Eliminates ALL noise from your signal, and works great for stops. I like the ns-2 over the g string for my 6505+ rig, but Ive heard the ns-2 just works really well in that setup. Ive also heard that the g-string would work better with my mako rig, so Im interested in trying that out again. However...the ns-2 works and it works well, so Im not in a rush.

I would say the isp if you were willing to use it in the loop as well, but seeing as you don't, just get the ns-2. I used mine in front of my mesa and my 5150, which was a noise monster. It has worked for years of serious abuse. I agree that any pedal in front of your amp will color the sound a little, but were talking about gating a high gain head, and not true bypass pedal snobbery here.....

Can you please elaborate on this? I'm using the G-string with a combo amp in the effects loop just to try and cut down on noise, but it DOES squeal like a bitch on the gain channels & it's the only pedal in the effects loop. I run the G-string just as specified:

Guitar-->ISP "Guitar in" --> ISP "Guitar out" --> Front of amp, amp FX send --> Decimator IN --> Decimator Out --> amp FX return.

Thanks for the help!!

i use and absurd amount of gain and a lot of quick starts and stops. the isp decimator does a great job. honestly though i am biased because it is the only one i have ever used. i love it. cheers!

I have a Boss NF-1 and an MXR Smart Gate.

The Smart Gate is good if you want a nice gate that keeps your guitar quiet between songs during a set. It's great and makes me sound more professional on stage. I don't like it for staccato riffing. It tries to be too transparent and musical and doesn't abruptly close the gate until you have the threshold set so high that it kills the attack too. Much better for what it was meant for... to be a noise gate instead of a special effect.

The NF-1 is a basic gate... I set the level I want the gate to close at and how quickly I want it to close. The gate opens and closes like an on/off switch with no attempt at "musical" decay, so I can set the threshold fairly low and still have the gate close abruptly. I really like it.

I've never used the NS-2, but from my understanding it's basically an improved NF-1 and that they maintained the ability to have the abrupt gating.

Standard Decimator will do the job at taking out noise at the front of the rig for sure. I had it for a long time when I was using the rack as my main rig and combined the ISP Decimator with a very light setting from the Rocktron Replifex's hush. Worked awsome.

Good luck
