My cousin (who doesn't play guitar) has been sitting on a '64 Strat sunburst. 100% original (even has the factory strings). Factory new condition. What is something like this even worth? Not trying to sell it, but I'm curious. I think it's pre-CBS buyout?

Mid Five figures, easy. Maybe more. Not 59 burst territory but what is. Lol.
Post pics if you can, love to see it.

That needs to go to Gruhn’s guitars for an appraisal. Get a certificate of authenticity and it will sell for big bucks. Sky’s the limit if it’s like you say it is...

^^^^ This... get an appraisal from Gruhn's. In that condition, with factory strings and all, it's a solid collector's piece and worth a lot more because of it.

And yes, would LOVE to see pictures!!

Indeed. I’m thinking 6 figures if it checks out and all of the case candy and original receipt are included.

You guys saying mid five figures and "six figures" are way, way..way..way overshooting and if you are interested in a 64 strat, please call me because I will sell you one at those prices   .

A 64 in mint condition will probably fetch $18K-20k with a COA to a buyer who really really wants it. A vintage shop like Normans might give you $15k.

That's probably closer to reality.

Why couldn’t I have had an old relative who had one of those just lying under the bed somewhere? Life’s not fair.

Well it's not like it's mine or anything. And my cousin is around my age—maybe late 30s. He got it at an estate sale like 15 years ago I think. I don't really care for Strats much. If it were a Les Paul Custom, I'd be begging him for it haha.

IDK... I've been seeing "excellent" '60s Strats go for around $15k-$18k lately. I'm far from an expert, but based on that one picture, I'd say the condition is at least mint. If I had to guess, I'd say somewhere around $25k, but I'm really just taking a wild guess here. I'm really only familiar with the U.S. market, too.

I am pretty certain that there are not a lot of '60s Strats that are in that condition. The uncertainty is how much owning a museum-quality Strat is worth to a potential buyer. Additionally, I have absolutely no clue what the market is like in Japan at the moment, although I do know that there are a lot of collectors there who are crazy for museum-quality pieces like this.

George Gruhn has as much experience and is as knowledgeable as anyone and much more than most. He'd be who I'd take it to for a realistic estimate, not that there's anything wrong with Norman's or, for that matter, Dave's Guitars. Might not be a bad idea to get a few estimates, for that matter.

Just thought of something else... since I brought up foreign markets, I have no idea what impact recent changes to the CITES treaty might have on something like this. I don't know, but there's a chance that the fretboard is Brazilian rosewood. Definitely rosewood of some variety (obviously), but it's impossible to tell from that picture. Anyway, I wanted to mention this as a good question to ask any appraiser and to keep in mind in case he wants to sell it outside the U.S.

Cool cool, thanks for the info. My cousin doesn't want to sell it. I was just curious on his behalf haha. :)

It’s a very nice guitar. That’s all I’m saying. :scared:

Maybe so... however show me another mint 64 Strat with original factory stings for sale so I can compare. ;) Seriously, that why I said take it to Gruhn.

Right? Now, I'm far from an expert in vintage strats but with the original strings I'd say it's beyond mint....if there was such a category. Mint guitars include slight pick swirls...which this one might not have. Either way it's an incredible find.

I’d love to see more pictures of this guitar. I absolutely love it.

Even if hes not interested in selling it he needs to get it appraised and insured for actual value.

Would suck to lose $25k+ to fire or water damage. And in the condition its in even a little water damage froma burst pipe could affect the value significantly.
