Painting it with really sloppy red, black and white stripes and then beating it up even more will solve all your tone problems. Use Schwin bike paint...

Where have you been hiding, inside your amp?

Inside my damn office at work...

Steve

I haven't tried one, but isn't the EVH supposed to be a really bright/thin pickup? Some people describe it as almost single-coilish? So unless the wiring is fubar'ed or the pickup is defective, it seems like the EVH wouldn't make a guitar too muddy/dark??

I have that pickup and its not bright sounding, but it is a single conductor humbucker that is sorta in between a PAF and single coil....its noisy as hell, but harmonics are outstanding. I didn't dig it at first, but once i dialed in the eq of my amp, its actually a bad ass sounding pickup. I have a warmoth strat with a single hum using this pickup and the body is swamp ash with quilted maple top..and it fricken barks like a son of a gun.

Guys,
Here are some pics of the 6 string turd. I messed with pickup height a little last night and that helped a little. I also noticed the pickup is at a weird angle in the pickguard to where the coil closest to the neck is much closer to the strings so I will attempt to fix that today and see if that helps. I'm not sure about thickness of paint. In the back trem cavity I can see exactly how thick the paint is. I held a 1.0mm pick up to the paint and it looks to be exactly that thickness.

Is this the guitar that you plugged into my Cameron when I brought it down?
That heavy one?

Yep, same one. Since I had never plugged it in to any big amp I just dialed your Cameron to sound good with this guitar. That might be why it sounded so harsh when you got it home. I thought it sounded cool with your Cameron. When I finally plugged it into amps I know...... well, not so much.

..sounds like a screaming demon would clean that right up...it has almost no thunk in the bottom end..pretty low output tho' innit.

It kinda reminds me of the LTD GL-256 too.

whats the value of the volume pot? if its not 500ohms its probably going to be a mud fest

Oh man I hope you can sort this guitar out cause that is hot!

Ditto...that guitar has the look. Too bad, though. The whole "sum of the parts" thing.....Hopefully it works out.

You can also try a 1k pot to help brighten it up. Guitar looks amazing, btw.

Yeah that can help, personally the 500 is the sweetspot for all the stuff I have tried. A lot of guitars have 250s and they are definitely muddy as hell. Threw me for a loop awhile back. I was sure the Dimarzio Tone Zone was a piece of shit but it was a 250ohm pot.

Guys,
Thanks for all the compliments on my new "ugliest guitar in the world". I have spent some time on the Duncan forum asking about this pickup, in this guitar. Many have said that the Alnico 2 magnets in the Duncan '78 are not the right recipe in a guitar that is on the darker side. The alnico 2's are soft and spongy and that's not what this guitar needs. A couple have suggested the Custom/59 hybrid with A5 magnets, but a couple have also suggested trying an alnico 5 magnet in the '78. Since I had a spare alnico 5 sitting around that's what I tried first. Through my practice amp at work, it seems to have really tightened up the lows a lot. I'll know more later through my real amps.

If this doesn't do it, I am going to try the Distortion as psychodave suggested and the Screamin' Demon as JKD suggested. Then I'll try the hybrid deal. I'm encouraged by the A5 in the '78 so far though. It's like an overwound '59 PAF specs wise.

The guitar really rings out acoustically so I think it is just finding the p/u for it. Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

I would second the distortion. I put one in my mahogany guitar and it really livened it up. That guitar was ALWAYS dark and mushy-sounding.

Curt,
I had the Distortion in my Edwards LP and didn't like it had a lot of highs in that guitar.
I think it was the guitar.
When I put it in my USA Jackson Alder body/Rosewood fret board it sounded really good with a 500k pot.
Although I will say based just when we have talked and my visits to your store IMO I think that pick up maybe hotter than you like.

I am curious to see what you think.

Thanks for the suggestions on the Duncan Distortion guys. I am looking for a strong EVH vibe with this guitar. I have three other alder bodied guitars that are set up for heavier tones and they do them well. One has a Floyd with a Custom Custom, one has a vintage bridge and a Custom and the other has a Wilkinson and a Custom 5. All sound really cool and I like every version of the Custom.

The Distortion makes me think it will be too high output for my goal with this guitar, but if I can't get this one EVH sounding i will try the Distortion and get a little more metal with it \m/

dude, just find an 80's duncan JB and I'm sure it'll be a blowtorch..Those old floyds are the shit, i still have mine i need to put back into my warmoth strat...does that neck have some girth too it, or is it those wussy thin one's? ; )...guitar overall looks f' ing tough! ...a lot of people may not know this by Ed had a lot of his guitars ( especialy the Kramers) stocked with those PU's. how do u know?, he gave one to friend of mine who was auditioning for Private Life the band he produced back then.
