Here's a prototype of the wahs I'm building. They are pretty much exact clones of old Clyde McCoy Voxes and so far the proto sounds awesome.I'm using Whipple inductors,ICAR taper 100K pot, polystyrene caps,BC109b transistors and NOS Sprague 4uf electrolytics.I got some NOS Mullard tropical fish that I will put back in but I honestly don't hear a difference between the greenies and the fish.

Can I T&E one for a while. I'll send it back with a full eval.

Very cool. What value are the green caps and where did you get them?

I have a Fulltone deluxe and I have been thinking about modding it for more midrange. It is supposed to be based on the Vox wah's...
The greens are .22uf poly film from Radio Shack of all places! I have another built exactly the same with Tropical fish caps and I don't hear any extra mojo.

Nice to see another builder on the forum
That looks great. Clean looking build. How does the Whipple compare to a Fazel?
I haven't built a wah in ages. I stick to fuzzes and ODs :)

I bought a few cases of tropical fish caps a while back and have yet to really hear the difference.
I normally just use them for clients that request the 'mojo'
Same with the Mullard or NKT transistors.

The Whipple is awesome compared to the Fasel. It has a nicer sweep,is more vocal and not as screechy on the highs just nice and smooth like the old Halo inductors. The Fasels have to be tamed down with a 33k resistor or less in parallel to the inductor for it to sound decent(that is if you are looking for the vintage Clyde sound). With the Whipple you can run a 100k in there and it is nice and vocal. The Whipple is also extremely tight in tolerance and Mike gets it dead on to to 500 mh every time. The reissue Fasels are all over the place.I'd love to see some of your work.Got any .22uf tropical fish you'd like to sell?

No .22uf's...but I can go to the place i get my stuff from and see if they have any.
I know they have tons of .0047uf, .01uf, .015uf. (I have those)
I'm going there this weekend....I can get lots and the price of them is similar to the 60's lol.
Let me know if there are other values you are looking for.

Update on my build is I went ahead and put in the NOS Mullard C280 tropical fish caps in place of the greenies and I CAN hear a difference. It just sounds sweeter and "wetter" if that makes any sense. It has a nice mellow growl to it as well that you hear a lot in the Hendrix recordings.Hands down this is the best wah I've ever played now.I'm working on another now that I've duplicated exactly but I'm just waiting on a new stash of .01uf polystyrene caps.I want to make sure that I can keep them consistent in tone and performance before I sell them. This first proto though is going to the grave with me as it's the wah tone I've wanted since I've been playing guitar.

That looks cool! I've always wanted to mess with pedals and whatnot, just haven't gotten into it yet. Good luck (looks like your past the point of needing it though)!

Let me know when they are ready to send out the door. I want one.

Curious about this as well! projectx102 do you do Wah mods as well?

Should be very soon bro.I got the other sounding very consistent with the first and I have a pretty decent stash of parts to make them.I found the magic number in transistor gains that gets me what I want in terms of tone and sweep.
