What was Nuno using? The album is wicked focused and really stripped down compared to Pornograffiti.

Was it the MP1 still or something else? I know in some live footage, he can be seen using SLO's during 92/93.

One of my desert island albums for sure!!!

The solo on "Stop The World" was from a demo he recorded with a mini practice amp with a dying battery.
From what I recall, they tried to recreate the vibe in the studio including letting the battery run out on the same little practice amp, but just couldn't do it so they kept the demo take.

That's wicked cool!

My favorite solo is the one on Rest In Peace. While I like Pornograffiti way more, 3 Sides is a sleeper album. I don't think it was a strong follow-up to Porno especially with how talented they are.

I had read that III Sides was an SLO for rhythms and a Gallien Kruger for some leads.

I think Pornograffiti was the last of the MP1. I could be wrong, but I was a card-carrying Nuno fan during those years, and I'm 99% sure it was a Soldano.

I was just telling my wife about this the other day when that song came onto the radio. You can really hear that it's one of those little toy Marshalls.

It's pretty evident. I dig the dry tone he was getting on the album. Porno had a great 'feel' but 3 Sides is so stripped and raw.

Still a die hard fan although when Porno came out, I did too.

Yep, that dryness is Soldano. You can really hear it on Warheads, and Rest In Peace. To me, that song is signature soldano tone.

From this AWESOME thread with Bob St. John (co-producer) recalling working with Extreme/Nuno http://www.gearslutz.com/board/high-end/16642-extreme-pornograffitti-9.html
Lots of extensive details.
Also lots of comments from Michael Wagener.

Re: Stop the world solo

The solo in stop the world?

that entire section, was taken from the demo...everything. again, it was a 2 tk demo mix that nuno made; we tried to recapture it...but there was no way. the guitar tone was made with one of those battery powered marshall amps (the little tiny portable version). nuno explained to me that he was in a hotel room (all of these demos were recorded during the extended extreme II tour) and he wanted to do the solo so BAD. but all the microphones were packed away...all he had was the multitrack equipment, the portable amp (and the batteries were nearly dead) and a pair of headphones.

he was desparate...he had an idea and he need to do it NOW. so, he plugged the headphones into the mic input on the console...duct taped the headphones to the little marshall amp; and started to play the solo. that is why that tone is so bizarre...as the amp was on the verge of shutting off. listen closely and it will make perfect sense. hey, i'd like to take credit for it...but that was nuno's inventiveness on that one. true story

III Sides guitar setup

regarding the guitar on extreme III, we used a pair of klaus heine modified 87's (i've always enjoyed the wonderful presence and non-hype-y high end on the neumanns) with a marshall slant cab, a soldano head (soldano series II super lead 60); i have attached the actual recall notes from the session (both for the mic/amp setup and console) believe it or not...these were buried in a giant stack of paperwork for extreme III mixing recalls. oddly enough, this wouldn't have been documented this completely, except that the band was rehearsing for the freddie mercury tribute concert; and we were concerned that in the confusion, something would get mis-adjusted. thanks to my trusty assistant, confidant and cohort carl nappa for his good penmanship back in 1992

Yeah that album kicks... the first three albums have their own tones and they are all cool but III sides has a bit more chunk to it to my ears. Great playing and I love the chords he gets on a lot of the more mellow tunes like Stop the World. The solo is bitchin too.. shows what real talent can do with shit gear doesn't it..

The 4th album was also interesting. Songs were not as strong but man was that tone FAT. I think that one was a vibroverb or some Fender with the Soldano? Either way, what a tone.

On a side note i believe Mike Fortin is working with Nuno on a new version of his Randall head

Love the first three albums, but his tone on Waiting For The Punchline is my all time favorite guitar tone ever. So raw and in your face. I'm actually chasing that vibe on my band's current recording effort.

Isn't he also working with Lynch??

I tend not to believe these rumours because i don't want to get my hopes up for something that will probably never happen.

Waiting For The Punchline was a '63 Vibroverb reissue. . .2x10 I believe. He used the SLO on the song Evilangelist.

One of the constants in Nuno's tone regardless of what amp he is playing is his RAT overdrive pedal, the original one with the LM308 chip. You see all kinds of amps he used from 2203's to the newer DSL and TSL n tours and the one thing that always turns up in the pics is the RAT. I thought the tone he got with his Randall amp was killer on the 2009 tour. Oh yeah a Rat circuit in front of that amp too. A Bill Lawrence XL500 will help too but a Duncan custom or JB will do in a pinch.

I picked one up on a whim to try it, while I can't shred like Nuno it does provide his tone, just saying before you go chasing down a new amp try the pedal into you Friedman marshall set to 2203 amounts of gain then run the Rat in front. I bet you will be smiling.

When I want my Nuno tone fix I break out my whiteface Rat reissue!

Nuno Rat pedal setting are:(oclock settings) distortion 8:30 am Filter 12 noon Volume 3 pm ;) There are pics on the net showing what his settings are if you look.

Yep - he's said that it's the "Filter" on the RAT that really contributes to his tone.

I need to pick one up. Which RAT models have that chip??

Good shit!

I have not had a Rat in the longest time but I got one when I had a L500XL in my Mockingbird. I wasn't going for Nuno but I've read/heard he uses it as a booster.

Yeah it's all there with the pedal mostly his pinched harmonics. He uses it into almost every amp he plays. The Rat pedal really enhances them, it's a very mid driven tone, I usually EQ the mids and treble back as well. He also uses greenbacks normally in his cabs to darken the mids some.

ProCo has reissued the whitefaced RAT with the original LM308 chip. I highly recommend it if you are going for Nuno's tone. It really shines into 2203 Marshall's but if you pull some gain out of your Friedman it should be spot on. Remember to roll your mids, treble and presence back some otherwise it will be harsh.

I thought i read on gearsluts there were pix (from the engineer) of him using a soldano hot rod 50 with a boss super overdrive, into a marshall cab.
