Sorry if I wasn't clear...I meant that's why I think most stock OD pedals work well for metal more so than most of the modded OD pedals I see...because of the lack of bass and high pass filtering effect you get. Most modders I see are usually bumping up the bass frequencies in the pedals, but I think part of the reason why pedals like an OD808 and TS9 work well for metal specifically is because of that lack of low end and filtering...it's what helps tighten up the amp.
Now, not all modders considerably boost the low end, and not all stock pedals sound great or retain enough. I'm just saying that seems to be the majority of what I see from modded pedals, and I think those guys/modders that do boost those bass frequencies are catering more to the low to mid gain rock type players that are using lower gain humbuckers, single coils, etc...into lower to mid gain amps like old Fenders, vintage Marshalls, etc...and end up with a thin sound with stock OD pedals because of too much low end cutoff.
With metal, you're usually running typically high gain, with higher output pickups and humbuckers, and the amps you're using already have a lot of low end. when you start stacking up pedals in front for more and more low end, it's too much IMO. Where as the boosted/modded low end pedals work great for certain players and music styles and wouldn't sound as "big" with stock OD pedals, the stock OD pedals (in general) seem to work better on average IMO for the same reason - because of the music style and rigs being used.
Again, not all stock pedals sound big enough. The SD-1 sounds pretty thin to me, but pedals like the OD808 and TS9 are a great compromise in the middle. I just prefer the OD808.
