OK. I am looking for an OD/Boost that will push my '77 JMP 2203 into the metal realm. Looking for a lot of drive and boost that can get mildly saturated if need be. Tight bottom is pramount. So far I have a BB pre, TS9, Mucho Boosto, and a Sexdrive and to be honest I usually go back to the good ol' TS9. However, looking for something fatter and less nasaly, but still with tight bottom.

The pedals I am looking at are:

OCD v4
Fulldrive2
Timmy
Suhr Shiba Drive
Barber Direct Drive
Barber Super Sport

Waddya think?

You should try the Majik Box Body Blow. It's like a suped-up TS9 but with more bottom end.

Have somebody mod your TS9 or look on the net and do it yourself.

Bro when I pick up the Blackmore I'll have you check out my Bodenhamer Bloody Murder. By far the best boost I've ever used. It cuts out just the frequencies that make an amp loose, and leaves the brutal chunk intact

I have a 2nd generation (I think) Fulldrive 2 that I'm not using. It's not the mosfet version, but it is in great condition. $100 and it's yours. PM me if you're interested.

dude, check out this Biyang. This is the best TS type pedal I've ever tried. I've tried modding mine, but never got any of them to sound as good as this. Bottom stays tight, but big and with the voicing switch it's very versatile. Here's a link - I bought 2 to have 1 for backup...

i typed boosted JMP into youtube for shits and grins, and our very own Bob Savage came up numero uno! and it's a bloody murder pedal!

The OCD is pretty tight and retains the low end as a boost. Sounds real mean when boosting evil amps that are orange!

majik box rocket fuel. the bottom end you are looking for is there with that pedal no two ways about it.

side note:
also see MARK1970 picture for his user ID for a tight bottom as well

I have modded a few TSs over the years and never had very good results for what I am looking for. Ususally the bass gets fatter but is flubby as hell. I am thinking of just doing a BYOC OD2 and fucking with it til I get what I want.

Awesome.

I recently got a Bloody Murder OD and it's the real deal. It took my stock superbass from squishy classic rock to modern rock no problem. Excellent pedal, and Jim gave me great service, especially over the holidays.

Never heard the Suhr OD but the rest you mentioned are all great. Also check out Catalinbead and Fromel. Also like what Pete said, mod your TS9. Its easy to do your self.

I've been using a Maxon OD808 for a while and love it. I've tried more OD pedals than I can count, from cheapo pedals all the way up to $300+ boutique types, and I always go back to that one. I think it's different enough from the TS9...at least to my ears.

I tried out the Bloody Murder, just wasn't my thing. And I'm not a big fan of modding OD pedals either. I think most of these guys that mod OD pedals are selling to the rock and lower gain market that are using their OD's into amps for music not quite metal, hence the bass bump. I think part of the reason why they work so well for metal IS the lack of bass and high pass filtering effect it gives your tone, tightening up the signal. Modding it for more low end kind of defeats the purpose of why a metal player would want to use one in the first place IMO.

This is very confusing and contradicive. Is metal not music? LOL

So, a modded pedal is no good for Metal.

Is"They" a modded pedal? On one hand you say they do not work for Metal and in the next sentence you state "the reason why they work so well for Metal is",
Just confused. I have a Bloody Murder and if the Maxon is better for Metal I would like to try one.

I guess I should have prefaced this better in my first post...Like I said above, I have modded many TS type pedals over the years and not gotten the results that I am looking for. I am not new to boosting or using an OD pedal, just looking for something different than a TS type and thought that since I have been using my TS9 for so long, maybe something has come out that I have missed that will do what I want it to do. I understand that a TS9 tightens up the bass partially because it cuts some while doing it, and that is why I do not want to mod mine because I like that sound, just looking for something different to have in addition to it.

That is why I specifically mentioned the pedals in the original post, hoping that maybe one of them is the way to go for what I am looking for. :)

Thanks. I have been through and also modded several pedals. Nothing I have tried works like the TS-9 type circuit. I just got an Analogman SD-1.Not cutting it compared to th BM. I think I am giving up on it for now. Although I want to try the Maxon.

Sorry if I wasn't clear...I meant that's why I think most stock OD pedals work well for metal more so than most of the modded OD pedals I see...because of the lack of bass and high pass filtering effect you get. Most modders I see are usually bumping up the bass frequencies in the pedals, but I think part of the reason why pedals like an OD808 and TS9 work well for metal specifically is because of that lack of low end and filtering...it's what helps tighten up the amp.

Now, not all modders considerably boost the low end, and not all stock pedals sound great or retain enough. I'm just saying that seems to be the majority of what I see from modded pedals, and I think those guys/modders that do boost those bass frequencies are catering more to the low to mid gain rock type players that are using lower gain humbuckers, single coils, etc...into lower to mid gain amps like old Fenders, vintage Marshalls, etc...and end up with a thin sound with stock OD pedals because of too much low end cutoff.

With metal, you're usually running typically high gain, with higher output pickups and humbuckers, and the amps you're using already have a lot of low end. when you start stacking up pedals in front for more and more low end, it's too much IMO. Where as the boosted/modded low end pedals work great for certain players and music styles and wouldn't sound as "big" with stock OD pedals, the stock OD pedals (in general) seem to work better on average IMO for the same reason - because of the music style and rigs being used.

Again, not all stock pedals sound big enough. The SD-1 sounds pretty thin to me, but pedals like the OD808 and TS9 are a great compromise in the middle. I just prefer the OD808.

Out of your list i only own (or have owned) the following:
OCD v4
Fulldrive2
Timmy
Suhr Shiba Drive

Out of those 4, I prefer the Shiba or the OCD for overdriving the Marshall.
You might not get into 'metal' realm...for that i suggest a Suhr Riot or a Fulltone GT500, or stack 2 of the OD's in your list.

Try the Danelectro Transparent Overdrive.
Supposed Timmy clone.
I traded in my modded Boss SD-1 one I heard it.
Makes the overall sound HUGE while boosting.
The SD-1 I had gave it a boost but robbed it of low end and mids.
Not the case in the Danelectro.
For $40 you cant go wrong.

Watch this video....
it was what sold me on it.
I never been happier with a Boost pedal.
