Odyssey is Yngwies peak

I said earlier in the thread Steeler through Marching Out. Definitive Yngwie to me. Now I own everything through Facing the Animal but I never pull out anything past Trilogy for a listen. I pulled out Odyssey and Fire and Ice because of this thread but they didn't move the needle, at all.

I understand the chorus on Odyssey isn't for everyone but man, the songs are great on that one! Maybe less impressive lead wise ( though Rising Force come on, easily one of his most iconic lead breaks) but I love the songs. Then follow that up with Eclipse and I've jizzed my pants. I think maybe the Yngwie threads should be the albums we rarely reach for at this point. If I am grabbing his stuff off the shelf, it is usually Marching Out, Trilogy, Odyssey, and Eclipse for me. For me the rawest and most driven Yngwie in my opinion, is probably Marching Out. That one is pinnacle fury. I think most of us will agree that Marching Out is special.

I agree but add fire and ice in there

I think what those of us who experienced Yngwie's career chronologically experienced was what seemed like he was now chasing of "the big hit" and that is what starting with Odyssey sounded like. Much more commercial. More polished production. So much less raw energy and literally FURY and so many songs written with an MTV hit video in mind instead of just ripping our faces off.

What we have seen over and over in this thread by the older guys is the same thing. We were all fully on board until or around Trilogy and then, yes of course he was still great, but it just was not the same.

It was the same with Van Halen. The first four albums. Then things got a little silly. Still great but not the same. Then with Sammy, yes, it was still Eddie and he still ripped and still got a great but very different tone. There are many people I have spoken to that are younger that their introduction to Van Halen was Sammy era stuff and they will argue that it is way better and they don't even like the Roth era stuff.

To those of us who lived it, it almost seems like an alternate reality when someone holds up OU812 or Odyssey etc.

Fire and ice . Dan was right. That’s the peak of ynqwie . I admitted I was wrong after listening in order

1988 . Was this where he peaked ? Was this his prime ?

Define peak ? The composition/songwriting ? The technique/speed? The stamina ? The studio production ? The live performance ?

I think that’s it’s a personal choice in musical expression … when did Bach or Mile Davis or Jeff Beck peak ?

Yngwie does write a lot of simple dumb riffs at times . It’s weird given his skill set . Steeler riffs are generic af
You don’t know much about Yngwie if you actually think he wrote cheesy steeler riffs . Those tunes were already written. He did the solos in a day and included the intro the hot on your heels which became the underground dive into the Sweden demos when he recorded and played all instruments on . That shit was at that time , completely different and was heard off .. especially on Strat and old Marshall .

You also probably don’t know when he split Steeler he jammed with graham bonnet which became to be Alcatrazz which he composed the music . He was showing grown ups how to play his music at what 20 years old? In a whole new country . Meanwhile we have people sneaking our country that are given money and benefits that citizens are not getting . Crazy

Just sat down on an airplane and thought I'd give Eclipse a listen. Then I noticed Marching Out is in Spotify so will listen thru that first. 💪

That's true, Odyssey is totally going for songs with hooks and radio time. Probably got him closest to that goal on that one. But he still played too much on Odyssey for the babes :D.

I really don't get your guy's love for Fire and Ice. Huge let down for me on it compared to Eclipse where he was dialed in on the 3 string arpeggio breaks. Also, the standout lead part in Fire and Ice is a rip off of Jet to Jet so he repeated himself. Eclipse for me is the top and end of the ride as i factor in composition and songs, not just leads. But by all means let's continue to counter each other here because it's fun and keeps the thread alive!

How EPIC is this opening arpeggio sequence??? I mean that's masterclass.

Is Yngwie's playing on fire on Marching Out or what? 🤘
My favorite era is Alcatrazz, but Marching Out has so many jems. On the Run Again, both solos. So perfectly in time, just ripping through his pedal tone licks and that opening salvo going into the solo.

The acoustic intro to Disciples, the delicacy of both Overture and Marching Out. Really, every song is a stamp on the fact that a new king had arrived and it was devastating from a technical and emotional aspect.

This whole thread boils down to what year you were born, what year you started getting in to music, what year you discovered Yngwie, and what was the first Yngwie album you got in to. There is a definite theme by the older guys that lived it, followed by a few guys that my guess would be arrived at the party after the old people had already gone home.

It don’t matter who made them . I just thought it was …cheesy . Lol I can’t think of another word . But I love the solos yes . But you’d probably think some of what I think is good is cheesy too . It happens
