Official Anti-Locking Tuners Thread

THe locking tuners on my Thorn are EXCELLENT! Ron did a ton of research before deciding on them. He found a set that pretty much has ZERO play in them and are a perfect gear ratio so that there is no slop whatsoever when you turn the button. Every other tuner I have has that small 1/16th of an inch play when you are turning the button...but not the Thorn. I will see if I can get the exact model of htem....they are a bit different as you can see the open cam on the back of the headstock...

He calls them Sperzel Ultralights on his website but I cant seem to find them for sale or on any website for that matter....

I have non locking Grovers and Schallers on my 2 main guitars and have no tuning issues at all...

I've been playing 30+ years and have never tried locking tuners. I don't even know how they work.

a threaded thumbscrew pushes a metal rod onto the string inside the tuner shaft.

It's gimmicky, and unnecessary if you know anything about changing strings.
If it serves its purpose it's cool. I have all edge/floyds on all my guitars and just use locknuts.

The Shamwow is gimmicky, locking tuners are functional and in most cases similar in cost to traditional tuners. Did some guy named Sperzel fondle you when you were a child? I don't understand hate for something with literally no negatives.

BTW, most of my locking tuners don't use a "thumbscrew pushing a metal rod into the string"

Some of these topics yeesh....it's like HC junior around here lately......you've gotta be kidding me......I've seen major tuning stability upgrades with every guitar I've installed or came with Sperzels or Planet Waves....

I was gonna say the same thing. "Anti Locking tuners" makes absolutely no sense, to me thats like saying "Anti String Winders!" because damn it, it works better when I take more time to wind it with my fingers.....

There is literally, figuratively, functionally, virtually, and spiritually no "upside" to standard tuners versus locking tuners except in the case of vintage correctness, where vintage correctness = appeasing old people and collectors neither of whom I give a good god damn about when it comes to guitar technology.

Well said...even better than I put it......people will bitch about anything on the internet........

I have sperzels on my 1990 PRS custom 24, the old winged style work awesome for me

I love the Planet Waves locking tuners I've got on my Artcore.

I don't see the point personally.
quick string change, you can string a guitar in about 1/3 the time

I have no need for locking tuners either.

Thats a big reason I like them so much, the fact they work flawlessly is just a bonus! :D

Those are called open-back/trim-lock sperzel tuners. Do a search on google, you can order them in various stores, tkinstruments.com for example. Those are indeed very cool IMHO !
