My band is entering a Budweiser BOTB this weekend. Just found out for the 1st round qualifications, we got to use house gear. That makes me nervous. But, it is a JCM900 Combo. That make me more nervous because I have never played through one of these. Was hoping to roll up in there with a CCV, but that has to wait for round 2 of the qualifiers.

Anyway, I am quickly throwing a pedal board together. Was thinking to put a Boss GEQ-20 and a Tube Screamer to smack the front end with. Any other suggestions on OD? I got this Rockbox Boiling Point that may be a good choice over the TS.

Ugh....... :aww:

tube screamers push 900's just fine. but in that situation i would probably just use a distortion with the amp set clean.

Tube Screamer....Check!

Bring Dave Friedman with you to put in the KS mod right before its you're band turn...Check!

You should be fine with a TS in front and if you use effects maybe some delay in the loop. Ive been stuck where you are at and it worked out fine. The real thing that scares me is that its a combo and sometimes those speaker are for shit, and if that's the case, nothing you do will sound right but at least the playing field is even.

To give yourself multiple options, if the TS out in front doeant work Id also look into having a backup plan like wiseblood say where you can use a D-box going into the JCM900 set for clean.

These days when I get gigs like that I use a Modelor and it works out great. I bring a Digitech RP1000 and throw that through the loop and at least I have sound I programmed in.

All in all you should be just fine.

Steve. Use either. You are on a level playing field since all bands have to use the 900. Before yo go on quickly swap out the tubes. Winged C's and some pre ubes.

Also, remove the preamp tube covers.  The 900 should be fine with a TS up front. I'm probably going to get an Amptweaker TightRock pedal to run with the clean channel for times like that. ( I have not yet ever had a time like that though, but I still want a TightRock)

Do you still have a rocket fuel pedal ? That would be a good choice, because you could set it up for the tone you want, and then set the boost on top with the click of a switch if you find during the set that your tone lacks a bit.
That boost would fix it if you were close. If nothing else the extra switch you step on would take your mind off the fact that they are making you play through a piece of crap.

If it's a JCM 900 Dual Reverb 4100 or variant... It has a diode driven preamp... like the CCV... So you should be fine. Lots of gain.

Thanks for the replies and input. I don't think I own a distortion pedal, but this Rockbox should work pretty good if needed for that and I have a TS mounted up too, along with an EQ just for shits and giggles. When we played at this club before, the other band used the 900's and they seemed OK. Got a delay and chorus mounted too, so I hope it will turn out OK.

I am not sure if they are the dual reverb 4100's though. I know they have two of them. Maybe I should throw me a Lehle in there and run them together since I am the only guitar player in the band. There are 14 bands so I know they are doing this just to keep things moving on.

Steve

I had a JCM900 212 combo. It was dual reverb, and if you want to be sneaky and make the amp sing a little more, there's a 50/100 watt switch on back. ;) It takes pedals in front pretty well, and while it has plenty gain on its own, it sounds way better when smacked with an OD pedal. Pretty shrill amp too - watch the high end and presence.

Stupid question- Does Budweiser even move any product in the Middle East? I'm assuming our military and contractors are the only ones consuming Bud.

it's gonna be ok Steve, just tighten your playing a bit more and tone won't matter. It's all in the hands and the band's tightness

Hell yeah, there's plenty of Arab alcoholics here! Saudi and Kuwait are dry. Everything else is wet. We will be in Bahrain.

I really dig the Rockbox Boiling Point, if you have it I would definitely take it with you. Take a few with you in case you have enough time to experiment.

Steve,

Same thing happened to me in a battle of the bands 2 years ago. We were instructed "MUST USE HOUSE BACKLINE". So we scrambled and bought distortion pedals, and set up "lite" pedalboards, etc.

Then we got there, and EVERY other band brought their own rigs, and used them.

SO... my advice to you: Be prepared to play through that POS JCM900, but, bring the CCV just in case.

This. And to be on the safe side; spill a couple of beers on the amp. Problem solved
