In using quality cables. I have a bunch of cables and patch cords of varying cost/quality and have always believed that there just wasn't that much difference. But last night at rehearsal I fried the cable going from my board to the amp. Me and the other guitar player were having a "volume" war and I cranked my amp up to about 8 on the master. When I turned down, the tone got very thin and channel one was basically gone. I thought I blew a tube or something but when I plugged straight in to the amp, everything was fine much to my relief

So what cables to do you guys like that don't cost an arm and a leg??

Make your own. Mogami and Neutrik/GLS ends.

Is this hard to do???

Just crimp and go??? Is there any soldering?

Any one of the lifetime waranty cables that banjomart sells.

Planet waves, mogomi, monster, etc. etc.

If it ever goes bad, just take it back and they'll give you a new one.

i used klotz lagrange cables for a while

i since just use planet waves classic cables, sound good enough to my ears and nice and durable, the 'american stage series' or whatever look pretty cool too, and not too expensive, would like to try em out, see how they sound

another thing to think about is a buffer in your signal chain for long cable runs etc.. all that stuff comes into play too

 i use Lava and George L's.....honestly, if I ever bought another cable at this point, I wouldnt even think twice about just buying a grab and go cable at G.C. Im over the cable thing.

I've made a couple before with some belden wire. There's a place in atlanta to by it by the foot but it still seemed too expensive for my cheap-ass   May have to look at your suggestion.

Yeah... I kinda always wondered about that. Was very close to buying a bunch of George L's for the longest time, but couldn't bring myself to do it. Always figured that any perceived payoff would be far from night and day. Because I use "decent" cables like Planet Waves, etc. I don't possess audiophile quality ears. I know decent tone when I hear/play it. But I can't dissect each and every frequency from 20hz to 40Khz and hear the difference between a Duracell and an Energizer battery. I don't think that most people can honestly. And even if some can, in the realm of [imperfect-sounding] live music... just how much does that kind of hair-splitting really matter? I just try to buy stuff that lasts...

How did a volume war effect a very low power signal carrying cable again? mA low power at that.

I spent like $1500 re-cabling my entire 6 amp W/D/W rig including speaker and patch cables and it sounded exactly the same as it did with the cheap assortment of cables I was using previously. They sure look purdy though... YMMV...

Total waste of money to me...

I'm 100% with gtrwun...

http://www.redco.com to get bulk cable and ends. for 90 bucks shipped I got enough mogami cable(2 different sizes) to make 3 25ft cables, redo my pedal board twice with leftover cable, and enough ends to have leftovers as well.

If you go with Mogami, watch this video on how to solder it, it's a snap!

Just curious, but hasn't this issue been debunked in the hi-fi stereo world?
I recall reading about a few blind-tests where they compared super expensive cables with shit ones and the "connoisseurs" couldn't tell the difference.
I know for sure that for HDMI cables theres no difference, but maybe that's b/c of the 0/1 nature of the signal....

I don't think it did and have to think it was purely coincidental.

Not sure about the high$ versus the low$ debate.

But....I do have a $39 cable that is noticeably better sounding then a $25 cable of different brand that I have.

I was hoping it wasnt just me?  I spent way too much on these things back in the day. I had a 100ft roll of the George L's and those Lava cables werent cheap, but I never heard any difference honestly. I know I tried my hardest to justify spending the money

LOL... yeah, I think that digital is digital. No difference in sound quality. That's why I laughed when I saw some sale on Dennon Cat5 network cables a couple of years ago for some hi-fi system and they wanted $500 for a friggin network cable! I got boxes full of them. I'll give you any color/length and only charge you HALF that!!!

I think difference between various quality cables is minimal but crappy lower end stuff you will notice more of an improvement when you switch. In this case you bypassed some gear as went direct, so that may why you heard a bigger difference. If you run your signal through a lot of devices each one has the ability to rob some tone from the original signal, at least that is my train of though and why I normally go straight in ;)

For cables I replaced the cabling on my pedal board I use in front of a 2203 with George L's and I noticed a decent difference, much quieter and defined. YMMV...

I use George L's for pedal board and for instrument cable.
I use Monster cable from heads to cabs.

Let me clarify; after the sound started to crap out I plugged a known good cable from the guitar straight into the amp and normal sound returned. I traced the problem back to my cable from the board to the amp. What was odd was how it seemed to just fail out of nowhere. Just never had that happen before...
