I realize there are a heap of clueless people out there, but this series seems ingenuine, weak, etc. Not hating on Ola. I'm a fan and never had a problem with his channel to begin with before his complaint of slowing down on subs.

To Ola's credit many guys I have met with a basement full of shiny new gear and no gigs genuinely didn't know what the hell they were doing.

This. I have played a bunch of stuff, but it's mostly because all my friends are rich programmer and doctor shitheads who have too much money and no talent.

That's why I think this is a good video series idea, because most hobbyists wouldn't know good tone even if they had it

Certainly listening to a lot of clips that get posted... it is what it is

That's pretty cool, I know when I first started getting tube amps, I couldn't dial it in. It either sounded like a gnat's buzzing ass or a whomping pile of bass.

The problem with the old days was getting any information and when you did get it it'd be like your guitar teacher recommending an amp (conveniently sold at the store he's teaching from) that he will make commission on. Get a peeeeeveeee classic 30 gtg bro. The problem today is sorting through tons and tons of bad information.

Can you believe I owned, and struggled with a strat and a four hole Marshall for like 5 or 6 years before I bought a guitar shop magazine that detailed cross channeling? Never heard of it. Boom! All of a sudden I'm not dealing with a rig like a jar of shrill pickles. The section where Ola was explaining the bass EQ to him was a fine example of having those knowledgeable insights handed to you. Dude could've been having a revelation for all we know. It's happened to me!!!

The pedal crowd should be pleased - that sounds amazing.

I didn’t know the TSLs were 150W. I thought they were 100W three channel.

Ola playing just sounded heavier. Right hand technique cannot be underestimated.

I believe Ola was mistaken there. The TSL only came in 50w and 100w versions.

This is pretty good, I'd like to see Ola do this with recorded tones using their setup or plugins / irs / sims as the camera audio only goes so far. Pretty cool

I had my "revelation" as a 15 year old skinny dan playing in punk bands in skinny jeans

I needed it explained to me that if your technique is good, you don't need gobs of gain as long as you have volume and sustain

And still to this day its the best way to figure out if someone knows what they're doing or not

Pretty insane that people need tone make overs? It's a fucking chug for God's sakes. How much of an idiot do you have to be to not know how to boost an amp or scoop some mids? I guess he's found some ideas to keep him relevant but this is just plain silly. He does have a mean right picking hand though, give him that.

Being on forums like this one kind of skews a person's perception about this kind of thing. A lot of what we think of as "common knowledge" around places like this isn't really all that common. Most guitar players are kind of knuckle draggers when it comes to knowing the first thing about getting a great tight high gain tone at the PA or recording level.

Yep, this is true, can confirm

Most guitar players have absolutely no idea what they're doing tonewise, and it's a bit nuts until you realize that most guitar players just use what their heroes endorse (NOT ACTUALLY USE) or whatever is convenient/looks cool

Not what they actually need to get the tones they want

RT is here for people when they get to the point where they understand what they are going for, tonewise, at the very least

The thing about guitar playing is that:

1. actually being able to play the guitar
2. learning about what gear is out there and what might get you closest to where you want to go, and getting it
3. actually being able to dial in the gear you have

...makes up three almost entirely different skill sets, all of which are necessary to end up making the sounds you want to make. So many players can be great at any one or even two of those areas, but clueless at the remaining one(s).

I really like Ola's idea here, finding people who need help dialing their stuff in and going from there. However while the guy in the room really got a lot out of OIa's suggestions, I'm not sure the room mic / camera mic he used provided quite enough detail for viewers following along at home to really hear all the changes happening during the dialing. If Ola packed a laptop and an SM57 to sick on the cab, viewers might be able to hear a lot more of what's going on.

just turn the knobs until it sounds good - usually works for me,

I still remember how tedious dialing in tones on the ADA MP-1 and MP-2 was....my ISP Theta Pro Michael Sweet is the same. Nightmare fuel

I had no knowledgeable musician friends, no magazines, I was also a bit of an airhead looking back at it. I had a completely clean solid state amp from the 60s and I wanted 90s gain, probably something like Metallica or Green Day or whatever.

I just walked into the local guitar store and explained that to the sales guy what I wanted. I remember him looking at me and saying you want an OD. So I got my uncle to buy me a Boss OD1 for my Birthday.

Fucking hate that sales guy. I just thought it was me that was the problem in not getting distortion properly. All I had was the overdrive. So later when I made a guitarist friend and plugged into his metalzone, I had a revelation. I literally thought that metalzone was the new gold standard lol. Was so fun.

At least your local guitar shop had boss pedals. We didn't have that and what we did have was marked way up over MSRP and the people behind the counter pretended like they were doing you a favor selling it. BF Egypt life. Without making 3-4 hour drives with a pocket full of dough It wasn't until I moved to FL that I found a shop where I could test affordable used gear and there was actually stuff to choose from and staff that knew what they were talking about.

Im playing breakfast eggs blues

Someone give me the cliff notes, did he have any Private Stock 10 Tops or original Klon pedals in there? Everyone knows that's where tone comes from. And unless he's playing C7#5b9 or II V I progressions, I'm not interested.

You are quickly becoming an asset to this forum with your knowledge of private reserve PRS guitars and other fine gear. Interested to hear whether you've retrofitted your older PRS guitars with the newer lightweight vowel tuners that Paul says are a must for real blues tone.
