I found an old Peavey EVH 5150 412 cabinet for sale. The current owner says it is loaded with stock Celestion EVH 25 watt speakers. Is there a way to tell what speakers are in the cabinet without removing the back of the cabinet, such as serial numbers, etc.?
The cabinet is a three hour drive away.
The owner is asking $400.

I've heard that these old cabinets are really solid; and that the speakers are excellent.

My amp is a 50 Watt Marshall JCM 800 Lead Series.

Any thoughts, suggestions, advice on the cabinet?

Thanks.

I'd ask the seller to pop off the back and take a few pics for you. I remember the old Peavey 5150 cabs had Sheffield 30 watt speakers. There is one at the local rehearsal spot where im at, it's the cab nobody wants to use (not sure if it has stock speakers or loaded with crap). Worth asking before driving for 3 hours. Good luck dude!

Peavey 5150 cabs were loaded with Peavey Sheffield 1200 75 watt 16 ohm speakers. Some say Sheffield 1200 and some say 5150, but they are the same. The speaker was supposedly modeled after the old Celestion speakers in Eddies cab. The cab is well built but $400 is a lot for that cab. Too much IMO. I do actually like the speakers and have 4 of them in a old Peavey Butcher cab. They can sound good with some amps but also maybe too smooth and dull with others.

Oh, and here is a quick little clip I recorded with a 5150 cab. Just a SM57 in front of the speaker.

Way too much for an old Peavey 5150 cab. I see them on craigslist all the time.

Should look like this

I've seen those cabs for 200 bucks. I wouldn't pay any more than that.

Those Sheffields are gross. It doesn’t have EVH’s unless someone else replaced them. Pass.

Yep, I played them for years back in the day and I wouldn't pay anything more for them now. Good cabs with the right amp. Sounded great with my old Peavey 5150's, XXX and the JSX. Obviously they paired well with the 5150 but also the other high gain Peavey offerings. In fact I never liked playing the 5150 through any other cab back then. Even back then you could get them fairly cheap used. And it's built good as well...as good as any standard cab.

The Fender built EVH branded 5150 cabs comes with EVH Celestions and are great cabs. The Peavey 5150 cabs come with Sheffields and are not worth $400 imo.

Actually the EVH Cabs are Celestion Heritage 30s. I own 4 of these cabs. The ones that say EVH on the back are just re-branded heritage 30s. They stopped re-branding them about 2 years ago.

The EVH Celestion 25 watt speakers, just like the Sheffield, are a finicky speaker, only really sounds great in use with an EVH amp, but...unlike the Sheffield, these are Celestions, they have more value.
We are not talking about a 70's Plexi cab, or a anything really collectible. Its a Peavy 5150...so stock or no stock really doesn't matter, at the end of the day, 250 tops for one with Sheffields, 350 for the Celestions.

Thanks everyone. Slight change of topic.
What about the Fender EVH cabinets, with Celestion evh 25 watt speakers? Do these cabinets come loaded with these speakers? Is that one to grab up for $400?
Thanks,
curt

Yes...they are actually EVH 20w speakers. Comes loaded in the EVH 4x12. $400 is a good grab for one if in great/excellent shape.

Yeah if it's the EVH cab with the EVH speakers and not the Peavey, go for it. Great cab tbh.

GRAB IT! Thats a great price for an amazing cab!! (THE EVH not the Peavey)

Totally agree with this. Adding a 3 hour drive to the tab for me would definitely make it a no go.

I view the EVH Fender cabs, as I do a Mesa and high end Marshall cabs. 500 to 550 used retail, around 350 to 400 for something like C-List. Its a good price.

My amp is a Marshall JMP 800 lead series 50 watt head from 1985. I have read that this amp will sound great with 25 watt celestions. Will my amp be a good pair up with the EVH cabinet? (One post above says that these speakers sound good ONLY with the 5150 amps.)
Any thoughts on this?
