Just got a loaner 4x12 70's something orange cab with celestion G12M rola 25 watters T1221 16ohm, black back with the 75hz cone, 16ohms. It sounds really good, the speakers behave exactly as I read about them, it excels in many genres maybe not metal. It really has a habit of sweetening most amps especially buzzsaw/harsher ones in a sense.

So I decided to measure it, see how the speakers are connected etc. Weird thing is, the cab is made from MDF. All of it except the minimal "bracing" (?) that in a way supports the back. That is the only bracing in there. It really is sturdy though, no rattles except with one amp.

Any info on these? I really thought that they were plywood. It has typical (73x81x32,8 cm) dimensions and weighs 40-41 kgs (about 88 lbs?).

I've tried an early blackface recto through it, sounds awesome (serial number 1000 something), a steavens poundcake mk I (really good amp), a marshall JCM 800 50 watts 1982 (first time I'd want more treble in a marshall), a brunetti MC-2 powering it (my favourite of those but doesn't really match this cab's tonallity and the one who rattled the cab from excessive thump) and the revelation was a kustom defender single channel 50 watt "p.o.s." made in china amp with JJ6L6s...With a rat as a boost I think I preffered the kustom for up to heavy rock (not modern). Weird keeps on going, this amp was a bit shitty with most other cab/speakers for distorted sounds!

So I want to slowly make a copy of this cab as it'll be gone as we speak. I measured everything and of course the relative speaker position which are rear loaded and not symmetrical.

Would it be wise to make it MDF? Or plywood? It's not the "which is the best for a guitar cab" kind of thing, I'd take plywood cabs every day but this I'd like to copy as close as possible. It doesn't even seem as a good quality MDF (wtf orange? Maybe it was part of their solid state line up? Those were made around 76-78 I think). Maybe a switch to ply sides/baffle would take away the sweet ressonance?

Also what current production celestions would be "as close from the box" with these celestions in the orange box? Creambacks? EVH's? A period of breaking in is of course expected. I don't know anything about greenbacks nor I'd want to play extreme stuff on them. These from a small search in scumback speakers site are supposed to be the classic greenback theme, of course they are beaten to hell and back in a sense since then.

If anybody could chime in I'd appreciate it!
