They've said the similar things about 'the youth of today' since the beginning of time. My parents had to walk to school...uphill both ways. I had to ride a skateboard to school...uphill both ways. And so on and so on...
This sums it up nicely. We are all a product of when we grew up and the culture around us at the time. If you wanted to make music you got an instrument and started playing it. And you sucked until you got better. Now you can "play" Guitar hero on the hard setting and have accomplished really nothing in the way of music. I tried to get my son into guitar and then bass but he just didn't have the fire to play. And his favorite band from 8th grade on was Rush, so at least i did something right. I hate to say this but "kids" today don't seem to have the attention span "we" had to focus on one thing be it a band or TV show or anything media related. They have the ability to watch or listen to anything anywhere at any time. They are just glued to their phones all the time. Whenever i have younger people over to my house (pretty much no cell coverage) they freak out and ask about the wifi passwords. Older people don't even care about it.
Society is also turning very narcissistic as well with "kids" with all the selfies and videos and competition for Facebook friends and complete self absorption.
And as far as spanking your kids now, you don't need to. Just take away their phone for a month.
