To accurately summarize this article, southern democrats (you know, the ones who embraced slavery, KKK and Jim Crow laws) put up statues of other democrats. Now democrats, in a failing effort to try and distance themselves from their racist past, want to remove the very statues the put up in the first place. Got it.

"Democrats" in the 1900 had different values than modern parties. Instead of making it political by simplifying everything to "Democrats are bad blah blah", read what the discussion is talking about.
Statues were erected primarily by Daughters of the Confederacy to oppose racial reform that was occuring decades after the Civil War. It had nothing to do with history of the Confederacy or Civil War, it had to do with oppression by people scared of change, typically ex confederate soldiers or relatives in law or judicial system, trying to remind people of color that they were inferior.
I don't really care if these statues exist or not. I'm just saying, read what historians actually have to say without your political filter.
