My deal fell through on a trade for a Herbert and I've done some reading of the PT100 because guys on here are loving it. I just sold my XTC here on the forum (Thanks Dave) this moring. I just wasn't getting the metal tones I want out of the XTC so thats why I was thinking the Herbert. I still play a lot of 80's hair band metal (VH type stuff) but also old Metallica metal. I loved the blue channel on my XTC, plexi type tone but I also love insane distortion. Basically of the 2 amps what one would be the most versitile? This is my last questions on amp selection, this has been driving me nuts trying to make this choice. I just dont have the cash to run 2 heads, 1 for each style and they just dont make a amp that does everything so I'm down to these 2. Also I do want an transparrent FX loop, that is very important! Thanks for your opinions!

i didnt like what i heard from a herbert, and still dont like what i hear from soundclips of them - i hear the same thing either way.

however i would recommend you check out a VH4 for the type of music you plan to play. it would be a better mix for the diezel category.

so with a PT-100 versus a herbie - id recommend the PT-100. however, if it were a VH4 and a PT-100 - id say check out a VH4.

I very much like the Herbert .... but I do not feel it is very versatile regardless of what others think. The cleans are OK. Probably one of the best amps for that low end modern sound. All Diezel's seem very compressed to me ..... no matter what sound. Great at what it does ....

I have not played on the PT ..... but it sounds like one of the most versatile amps around.

I agree with the post above. You might want to check out the VH4. I like the 2nd and 3rd channel for that classic rock sound.
3rd channel being a little more heavy.

I heard alot of good reviews and sound clips on the PT-100 and would want to try it our myself. Check out some vids on
youtube.

Ya, Ive been all over you-tube watching everything! I just like too many things.

guess im the odd man out, i play tons of different stuff and herbert kills it. super versatile to my ears. but hey its all just an opinion

Hey Greg, I sold my XTC about 6 months ago and went thru a new amp trial phase and now have a PT100 that I have had for about a week. I'm really digging the PT100, if I was to go with any other amp it would be back to an XTC. The XTC is a little smoother and darker. You can def get some nice low end from the PT100 with the Whomp II switch, it's like the excursion switch on the XTC. Channel 2 on the PT100 can get plenty of heavy metal gain, and can be backed off to get a nice dirty sound. Channel 3 on the PT100 is over the top distortion, maybe not as smooth and as controlled as the XTC if you have the drive really cranked past 2, but that not a bad thing either. The FX loop is very smooth like the XTC, it also takes pedals well.

All that said I have never owned or tried a Herbert, it was on my list to try but I never got one.

I am not sure why everyone thinks the CAA amps are "versatile." The PT100 does have the pseudo 3rd channel with the extra gain stage, but by and large its a two channel amp with various boosts.

I had the OD100 SE+ for awhile, and I was blown away by some clips and vids I'd heard, but in reality the amp didn't live up to the hype I had built up for it. Mine was a "brought up to spec" amp though that started as another version, so maybe that's the issue.

In any event, yeah, the Herbert is compressed feeling, moreso obviously at really high gain settings. In terms of being "versatile" I think the mid cut feature, the fact that its MIDI capable, and the +/- setting on the 2nd channel make it super-duper versatile in terms of different overdriven tones that are remotely switchable. Of course its not a Marshall in one channel and a Mesa in another, but as far as a wide palette of distortion tones, I think its pretty neat and I love mine.

Having said this, I REALLY want to try the PT100, but I am going to wait. Every time I think about just shelling out the cash, instead of selling some stuff or working a trade I recall my experience with the OD100 SE+.

Another Herbert vote from me. It's way more versatile than most of the "metal" vids & demo's online. I love the Diezel's with single coils more than humbucker equipped guitars though. I was a Les Paul guy for decades until I started using Diezel's & now I'm a die hard Strat guy with these amps. No extra pedals neccessary except for maybe a little delay & chorus in the loop. Also, the Diezel's have "The Very Best" effects loops I've ever heard & like most people, I've owned a ton of other shit.................

Make sure to listen until the solo:

If you decide that you'd like to try a VH4, PM me. I haven't decided yet, but I may sell mine (2008, original owner and mint).

I don't know what the difference between a PT100 and an OD100SE+ is, but I had the latter next to my XTC and it just wasn't in the same league IMO.

Seeing your You-Tube clips makes me want a Herbert even more!! Your tone is fantastic! The depressing thing is how bad it would sound with me playing it! Your playing is incredible!!!

I am biased between the two however I can honestly say that our loops are fantastic along with the Herberts versatility. Cleans are wonderful as are the metal tones. What people never give the Herbert credit for are its rock tones. There is nothing this amp can not do IMO. If you are talking quality tones across the various tonal spectrum, you are hard pressed to find any single amp better then a Diezel. Build quality, versatility, warranty, service, loops...all good stuff.

Sounds great. I think Richie Sambora is a VERY underrated guitarist!

I am also in the market for a new amp. I am torn between the VH4, Herbert, and the PT-100. So I'm keeping an eye on this thread. So you guys keep the comparisons coming.

Not that I want to sound like an ass but I hope you are going as insane as I am over this shit!!!!!! I have listened to so many clips and read so much and I value the opinions here a lot because there is a wide variety of players here! And by the way thanks for the opinions!!

I would go with the Herbert every time! They produce the best metal rhythm tone of any amp I've tried in over 30 years of playing. I've found many amps that will give me from a great clean tone to a classic rock crunch. But for me, not not many are over the top enough in the gain dept. The Herbert has so much gain, you'd think the thing is about to melt! Perfect!

I am loving my Marshall stash but I will always want a Herbert just because

If you have questions regarding anything Diezel I am happy to answer them personally via PM or voice. Good luck in your quest for the ultimate amp.

The Herbert is very close! I'm waiting for a call to seal the deal!
