I judge credibility by a combo of the following criteria:

5. age of player (tonal peak is usually between 25-35. Older or younger = shitty tone.)

I have to respecfully disagree with ya on this one Gene, IMO the best ears on this site are in their 40s or darn near 40.

Maybe you dont know the ages of people here

Maybe he does and that's why he gave that range

I'm out of the range, too old :D

I suck regardless of age, I just enjoy playing anyways

I always look for negative reviews, personally. Or try to find someone playing the same basic genre of music who seems to be able to play ok and is doing what I'm going to do with that gear more or less. (Gigging, recording, playing at home, whatever.)

Case in point: There are some badass jazz/fusion dudes on the gear page who IMHO wouldn't know a good heavy tone if it smacked them in the face. However, if I was chasing a Robben Ford tone they could point me that way. By the same token I wouldn't look for one of the metal guys about an amp for a good clean tone or a dirty stones-type crunch. People all have their specialties.

Add to that we all hear things differently. Sorry guys, I don't get the Marshall JVM410... it's ok and flexible as hell, but the tone doesn't do much for me. I know this was be-all end-all amp not long ago, but the ones I played just didn't knock my socks off.

There are a lot of people on here that flip gear....but also have great chops and great tone...so that doesn't automatically invalidate the opinion for me.

Good players tend to sound good through almost anything, so whatever their amp of the week is sometimes I tend to discount it because their playing/chops sort of overshadows it...

AHHHHH! Credibility, shmedibility! I'm just trying not to trip over my cable and break my hip! Now excuse me while I get back to expounding my worthless opinion and eat my applesauce.. :aww:

This is almost certainly a very good point...I can play the same lame-ass riffage and out of tune leads through any amp

Grammer shammer wheres my walker? I must say that while my guitar playing has gotten better my surfing in hurricane waves has gotten worse. I am afraid I will throw out my back or hip these days. I still paddle out and wonder what am I doing out here.

When I'm in a band, I try to get gear that "fits" that situation the best according to my budget. I find that when I'm not in a group, I rotate gear frequently. I'm not a "tone" hound and I've definitely been around the block a few times to know that high $$$ doesn't always equal the best. Personally, I take all opinions with a grain of salt....I gotta try the gear to make my own opinions.

hang around awhile and eventually you'll find the guys that make pretty good barometers for yourself.

There are a few guys on here whom I respect their opinions on tone. However, most of the guys on here play metal. I play hard rock. (sometimes a different thing) So some suggestions don't really apply to me. Hell, for all I know most of you think my tone sucks...lol! I see it like this. People can recomend things, but until I can actually play it, then it's just an opinion.

i don't talk about gear much. i don't know much about gear. i'm one of the guys thump mentioned that has only had about 4 guitars and MAYBE 4 amps my whole life. i'm too broke and too busy being in a band to actually drop major coin on gear. that's just the way it goes. i've never had clips cuz i have no recording gear.
i sometimes envy you all for getting the opportunity to try out new stuff but sometimes i'm glad i'm not so picky.

there are some really cool dudes here but to be honest, i can't go by that either cuz you may not be like that in "real life". i have alot of "jackoff" posts for fun and that's all it is...fun. i've fukt wit people in the past but i'm pretty much jus fukn around. oh yeah...and i CAN spell excellent...i jus don't wanna sit here for 3 hours typing shit out when i can cut a few corners and save me some time.

when it comes to buying sumthin'...i jus talk to the person and decide if i wanna deal wit them or not. sumtimes it's an easy decision and other times it's not. usually if it's not an easy decision, i won't go thru wit it.

when it comes to opinions on tone...NOBODY has ears like me, so NOBODY can tell me or explain to me how sumthin sounds. and that goes for everybody else too. you really gotta experience it for yourself.

tone is too subjective to have someone else tell you about it.

I listen only to the opinions of people that are willing to sit down with me, face to face, and buy me meals and beers.

well, i am pretty easy.

I don't think having a lot of gear makes the opion better or worse. I also couldn't agree LESS with the idea that tone is a function of age. Some of the best players I know get better and better tone as they get older. Steve Morse used to have sucky tone...now his tone sounds awesome. I'm only talking about tone NOT playing or writing ability. That goes for these as well, all have better tone:

Steve Morse
Vinnie Moore
Satriani
Vai
Timmmons
Beck
Even Brian May
