I am torn between going to a Randall RM22 head or the RM4 preamp in the near future. If I went with the RM4 preamp, how do you think the Rocktron Velocity solidstate power amps would sound with the Randall mts modules? I would be more interested in the Velocity 100 due to it being cheaper. I play at home in the bedroom only if that helps.
All opinions welcome

my vote is for the rm22 ... but you already know that

If you are looking at using a Rocktron Velocity, watch eBay and get you one of the older 150's. Much better sounding and designed by the guys that are at ISP now. They prices on them are good also.

I'd probably go with the head, buying a preamp and finding a decent power section can be quite expensive, not to mention the space a 3-4u rack takes up compared to the head as well as additional costs such as a midi controller etc..

I definitely enjoy the Modular world. I'm using the Egnater dual channel system, but I have, and have had some single channel modules before. It's a great platform for getting the sound you're looking for. It can be easy enough to find a good power amp that will let the modules shine, but then again you'll be looking for a MIDI controller to change channels, back to the rack setup, etc. This can deepen the already incredibly deep MTS rabbit hole. The only question is, how far are you willing to go? :D

I have used an RM4 with various power amps (RT2/50, VHT 2|90|2, etc.), but have recently switched back to using my RM100. It's just so much easier, lighter and better looking (FWIW).

This may be something to consider.

actually I wouldn't need midi controller for bedroom playing only..the RM4 has a channel switch on the faceplate i believe...i don't mind punching a button to get where i need...i'm simple :D

I've had the RM100 and the RM4 with a RT2/50. IMO I think the RM100 sounded better at both stage volume and bedroom volume. Kinda like it had more headroom or something. Just a more crisp sound with all the modules I owned.

Also, the RM100 sounds great at bedroom volume

If you need 4 sounds go RM4 or Egnater Mod50, if 2 are enough and you want a small package that sounds big, RM22. Latter also has the two master volumes, which come in very handy.

I'm loving my RM22!
i know you are ! I haven't forgotten you either Curt ! I know you have Lynch judge modules in stock also ! :D

I would go with the RM22. I have had 2 RM50 combos, and 2 RM100 heads. I am down to one RM100 head but still want a RM22 for a grab and go, lower volume, and/or backup rig. Not to mention I have two modules that need a home instead of sitting on top of my RM100.

Well...I decided for space reasons also...I will go ahead with the small RM22 when I get the money (accepting donations LOL)....thanks for all replies !

I tried a couple of Rocktron power amps (150 and 300) behind the RM4. I really didn't like the tone. It seemed thin and sterile. But then, during my A/B-testing, the Rocktrons were competing with a VHT 2/90/2...which I still think is the best power amp for the RM4. If it were me, and I were fine with using just 2 channels, I would opt for the RM22. I actually have an RM20 now. It will have a fuller tube tone to it. Of course, the Rocktron can get down to whisper volume levels. Whereas the RM20 still needs a little volume to sound great...closer to conversation+ volume levels...after all, it is a tube amp. And, the 20 watts of the RM20/22 plugged into a 2x12 or 4x12 can get louder than most people would guess....loud enough for most small/medium stages.

Can anyone tell us if the RM22 can keep up in a band rehearsal when using a 4x12 with it? Also, does it have some descent low end using the Density control? Also on the back it look like a midi jack sorta but is it? The RM22 does look like a very cool option indeed. The Ian modules sound pretty interesting. My gears are turning now also!

The RM100 is like 100lbs? LOL....seriously it is a monster. I would take the RM4 preamp and RT power amp with some Jaded Faith modules. Does anyone know if you can use instrument level analog pedals with the MTS preamp and power amp???
