So my friend has an amp that's in great shape and works flawlessly however..It has no tubes in it and he doesn't want to buy tubes for it and thinking of selling it as is. Would he take too big a hit and just forget about selling it or, just roll the dice and see how it plays out? Yeah I know...depends on the amp etc..Which answers the question but, what do you guys/gals think?

You have no idea the amps I've sold over the years with the tubes that were worth more than the amp itself but, That was before I got edumacated...

I prefer to ship amps without the tubes, or at least packed separately, to avoid issues with breakage. With my MTS mods I almost always ship without tubes.

With your friends amp, to help avoid any issues after the sale, I would have him take a video of the amp in use with whatever tubes he has on hand before he packs it up. That way if the amp arrives and something appears to be wrong, the new owners tubes could actually be the problem.

^ THIS

I would have no problem buying an amp without tubes except that It would make me suspicious as to why it has no tubes unless the guy just wanted to keep them. I would have to see a video of the amp working or buy it with PP so if it was a POS I could return it

That's a great idea but..There are no tubes to be able to do that. Hindsight being 20/20...wished that was thought of.. oh well :aww: I don't have any spare tubes anymore to help out so I'm guessing start scrounging tubes huh?

Don't know why this is a thread. It is basic, if the sale reflects the cost no problem but if not I would pass. Further, I would not be suspicious if a deal didn't include them based on the PayPal guarantee. Next...

I got some of those in an uberschall (i think was an uberschall) I got from you

You (he) could always take it to Guitar Center or the like and just play dumb. "I bought this amp without tubes and now I want to see if it works". You know act like you are going to buy something. Maybe even, buy some tubes. 'Test' it out. Record. Give tubes back. Profit.
:dunno:

(sorry for those of you that work in a music store and would absolutely hate it if you knew someone was doing that to you on purpose)

I know I know.

But if I walked into my GC and said hey man, can you hook me up with some tubes so I can see if this thing works I bet they would help me out. YMMV. That's why I suggested it.

What amp is this BTW?

It's a real clean Peavey classic 120/120 power amp. it takes a total of 14 tubes I think..lol! Not a high demand or expensive amp anyways but...cost about what it's worth to retube the thing to sell..lol!

I just bought a MESA Boogie strategy 400 for $426.00 on eBay. I can sell the matched quad of 415's that tested 80% on my tube tester for about as much as I paid for the amp itself. There's still some coke bottle 420's and sovtech el34's and 4 nice pre amp tubes in it! Yeah, I would've bought it if it had no tubes in it and I did buy 16 new tubes for it.

Sometimes life throws you a bone or two.

Oh wow. Yeah - that would be a bit of a challenge. Wish I could help out - good luck.

He'll take a bigger hit with selling it without tubes since the buyer will have to buy tubes for it, then bias it to get it working right.

Unless of course the tubes are Mullards, Telefunken and Amperex tubes, then it's a crap shoot...for the buyer. But I figure it would lead to complaints, too.

That's kinda what I was thinking...way too much grey area for anything a buyer might consider "wrong" with the amp real or imagined...I ordered tubes for it... lol! :D
