Here is the deal. I'm looking for a switcher to put my 5 pedals in the rack and switch in and out before the amp input. Also may incorporate additional switching in the future. In the past I had a Rocktron Patchmate looper, the older one. Didn't have any issues with it although I did notice a slight difference in the tone compared to running straight into the amp. I know there are a few options out there right now so I'm looking for opinions from those with experience with them.
Looking for the good, the bad and the ugly on these. Any help is appreciated.

Up for consideration are:
New Rocktron Loop 8
GCX switcher
Axcess GRx4 (x2)
RJM switcher

If there is a unit I'm forgetting, let me know.

thanks!

Personally..The RJM RG-16 is the shizzle plus
Cables available to handle all amp functions

Some others are:

Custom Audio Electronics 4x4, or, Custom Switcher (Mine-- w/ 22 Functions) was less than the Big Sound Sculpture Switchblade
If you can find one- an Axess RX1
Sound Sculpture Switchblade
Skrydstrup R&D Switcher

Are you just basically looping the pedals or are you wanting to program amp switching patches as well?
If you're just looping, I've had a Voodoo Lab pedal switcher for about a month and it actually sounds more transparent than the 3PDT loopers. Closest sound to straight in that I've tried so far.

I haven't heard a switcher that didn't change the tone in some way.

Every time I set up a huge rig, I end up going back to simple "preamp-->2290-->power amp-->cabs"

You can get a mint used Patchmate Loop 8 for 300 and its an awesome unit. I didnt notice any tone suckage and the programming was a piece of cake... For the money, Its very hard to beat IMO.... The GJM is great but 2x the price and its overkill for your app...

Rocktron all the way!!!

woweezowee!!!!

RJM Mini Line Mixer?!?!?! $180 street!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the info gents! Looks like the new RJM box is just a function switcher, not a looper so I don't think that will work.

I'm familiar somewhat with the Rocktron stuff, and it may be the way to go.. I've also hear good things about the GCX. Anyone have experience with that unit??

Just looking to switch pedals in and out right now. I use the Egnater Mod amps so channel switching is midi. I've hear good things about the VL pedal switcher but I really need the midi function.

Thanks again!

I have personally talked to Bob B, Steen Skrystrup, and Mario from axess and they all got great switchers going on.Mario actually reccommended me to go w/ the Switchblade at this time.I dont know too much about the RJM, but hope to soon. Switchers have came a looooong way since the 80's and tone sucking shouldnt be an issue if your levels and effects are set up right.....I personally love my gl switchblade- its 100% transparent, and has a ton of loops, and unlike any other switcher- the ability to morph/fade the presets in and out w/ each other......but it costs a bit. :D

no.

Features include:

* 8 audio loops for effect switching (4 grouped together in series, 4 independent loops)
* 8 function switches for amplifier control (channels, reverb, effect loops, etc.)
* A high quality audio buffer is provided which can be placed anywhere in the audio path
* Two 8 pin DIN jacks allow you to control a single amp, or two amps simultaneously
* Control cables are available for most amplifiers
* Works with all MIDI footswitches
* Responds to both Program Change and Continuous Control messages
* Easy programmability using the front panel buttons and LEDs
* Up to 256 separate programs can be saved in memory (2 banks of 128 programs)
* High quality relays are used for maximum sound quality, compatibility and reliability
* Supports both latching and momentary switching
* All jacks are electrically isolated where possible, preventing ground loops and allowing multiple amps to be controlled safely
* When using a 7-pin MIDI cable, the RG-16 provides phantom power to compatible MIDI controllers
* One year warranty

Pedal Switcher is controllable via MIDI with the Commander, but I don't know if any other MIDI device can operate pedal switcher though.

The Rocktron is pretty much Identical to the GCX HOWEVER, The Rocktron has built in Memory, a Bigger transformer for all of the Phantom power that youll ever need and the programming buttons on front make it a snap to program your loops. All of that and it costs the same as the GCX

Like I said, Patchmate Loop 8 all the way!!!
