So I order a helios 50 used off reverb, decent price. Ships quick, 2 days. , have it delivered to work as I am not home to sign. Luckily I am standing at the delivery door when ups pulls in. Unloads several boxes including my amp. So I grab it, amp is rolling around inside the box, box is crushed on several sides, broken not all the way into the carton but definitely torn and caved in. Refused shipment and sent back, seller said amp is inside another box inside the outside box., says he wrapped amp in 100' of bubble wrap. Would anyone take a chance on that? I can't for the life of me understand anyone owning a tube amp not knowing the limitations of it being secure and rolling around , much less fedups isnt taking a rest every 5 boxes they load. Amp may have been fine, just think I get it then somethings wrong, or loose, who knows. Just curious if any other rigtalkers would be ok signing for that?

There is no way I would have signed.

What is next i don't know.

No way would I have signed! Let seller and U.P.o.S have fun pointing the finger at each other.

I totally understand not signing for it....that said....you could have still signed and checked/tried it out. Could be that it's completely fine. In all my yrs stalking and buying GC used stuff, believe me I've seen some ridiculous packing jobs lol. But, all that said not one amp had any damage to it, other than one 81 2203 with one broken GE 6550( I shed some tears) but the amp worked great. Plus I got it for like 850, before all the Marshall used prices jumped.
But, totally understand what you did and it is totally justified. That guy obviously has no clue how to pack an amp if it was moving around in the box.

If he truly did double box it, it probably was okay. But you did the right thing not signing for it. The amp should not be rolling around in the box, he is a shitty packer.

Thanks for the reply, I definitely was not feeling it and thought it's to easy to make it stable inside the box, foam etx.. sad reality is I have no glass for the gas!! Ampless weekend lol

Thanks for the reply and opinion, I felt a bit to picky in some ways, GC is a safe bet as they accept returns, but yes I know, some loose packing for sho. Listing said no returns I definitely needed to not gamble. He gladly accepted it back when I sent him the pics, then posted a note with the return "." Not a scratch on it. Was secure inside the other box when I opened it" honestly cosmetics are no deal breaker but solder joints and other delicate factors are IMO, I wonder if some sellers or owners do not care about bumping tube amps around a bit. I dont think its designed to do that but I'm no amp builder.. Tnx again!!

Thnx man, I wouldn't feel comfortable shipping one that way, it's to easy to fill up with foam, wrap and even cushions.

I go so far as to double box AND THEN I wrap that first box in a thick uhaul moving blanket that I cut down to size and wrap. I figure if I am shipping a $2000 amp across the country, what is $10 extra really..for not having the hassle of returns/unhappy buyer, ect.

I definitely agree, and something I always consider , even if I have been paid theoretically the amp I am shipping still belongs to me until it is in the buyers hands, the insurance is to protect the shipper, i wonder if that amp was insured? Does that assure the seller it's ok to toss in a box and send away? We are lucky to have shipping as swift as it is but they dont baby anything

I have had some amps show up with packing jobs that I could not believe ! Rolling around hardly any packing material etc. And to my surprise they worked without issue and no cosmetic damage. Ive also have had the opposite packed well and tight with shattered glass bent transformers etc. It really is a gamble on how the particular shipping company's employee's handle your packages. Falling off conveyors etc.

I am always a mess when I have amps as well as guitars shipped out until I get the thumbs up from receiving party.

Reverb would have covered you in this event had you signed for it. If it was a forum purchase I may have done as you did. In this case though, I think he may be out shipping and you returning it without testing he may have recourse to give a refund minis shipping depending on his profile policy.

I've been thrown off forums for being a dick, but the one thing no one can accuse me of, is selling items that are not exactly as described, and/or inadequate packing. I know exactly what I expect, which is what I provide for the buyer. Nothing less is acceptable. When I think of the amount of highly desirable and vintage gear that's been destroyed since the advent of ebay... it's disgraceful.

As to your situation, a box bouncing around inside another box is completely unacceptable. Good job rejecting the shipment.

Honestly, maybe it helps out the next guy? Cant understand sellers who dont understand that taking a few extra minutes to pack something provides a regard to the buyer and the actual gear. Tnx man

I hate guys that don’t pack their shit properly....
Agreed, I wouldn't sell it or buy it that way. Tnx for the reply

Here's how my last Marshall DSL40C arrived from GC to my doorstep. But it wasn't damaged or scuffed at all.
