Has anybody ever moved to one of these from a front loaded 4x12 or got one side by side? I’m definitely no novice but I’m just flabbergasted at how objectively “shitty” it sounds in comparison and wondering if it’s just me. I got forced into going the 2x12 route and I want to kick puppies I’m hating it so much. It’s the most tubby, dark, polite sound I’ve ever heard out of a vh4... makes no sense. Immediately felt like I had my gain reduced by half because I’m guessing some of the highs that make it gain-y are gone and the low end is just round tubby BLAH sounding. Sounds like I’m playing with flat wounds and wood saddles. Anybody else have this... is it just how they sound? I don’t see how the low end got so wooly honestly. I know it is working the speakers harder but Christ!

Sorry for the rant,

Nick

I have some similar cabs to you.
I have a newer FL Diezel V30 412, and an avatar sig 2x12 cab, thats about the same dimensions as your orange (but it has dovetail joints). I also have a custom 412 fl with k100 (it slays in stereo with the Diezel).

I agree. 4x12's just flat out sound better. Then Frontloaded 412's sound even better.
2x12's work good for lower volume tones, but def don't make the sound better.
It's always been a compromise. I always feel disappointed when playing directly from 4x12 to a 2x12.
It's not as bad if your ears are fresh, but if your used to that 4x12, it won't measure up.
Especially if your playing through a Diezel fl 412, those are just amazing beasts. All the frequencies come out more 3D and alive. There is this tightness and projection this cab gives.
So no..... your ears are playing tricks..... and I find the same drawbacks.
I have (1) 2x12 left. But it's for sale, because my big cabs sound BETTER, even at low volumes.

I don’t get where the darkness is coming from really... I can’t fathom why it sounds like it’s killing my gain either unless like I guess it’s killing some frequencies that contribute to it. I’ve played an orange 4x12 before from a back line situation and it wasn’t nearly as dark. EDIT: Also to note I know the amp is fine, sounds just right on the Diezel AND the oversized Mesa cab in all its fire breathing glory.

What speakers are in it? I always found my Orange 2x12 really dark too....compared to say a Mesa 2x12, which has that low end but because of the Mesa v30s, still really projects.

I'm running an Avatar 2x12 now and honestly it sounds great....running a v30 and Lynchback right now...I don't really miss my Randall 4x12 except for bone-shattering metal tonez!

It’s got v30 in it, I just can’t explain it?

----(TRUTH)----

-its a classic case of 2X12 SYNDROME, ive tried them all & and the only ones that sound-(OK)-are the OS-&-PORTED 2x12's-(GENZ-BENZ G-FLEX & PORT CITY OS WAVE)-

-there is something better,.... a quality 4x12 with only 2 speakers,.. you can go DE-TUNED-(my favorite)- or block off 2 of the speaker holes-

-i know that ORANGE 4X12's are made out of 3/4" BB PLY,.. not sure about 2x12's.. have you taken the back off to peak inside? verified wiring and ohm's?

My personal experience has been the opposite, I far prefer oversized 2x12 to 4x12.

Less comb filtering (phasing) and if vertical perfect horizontal throw across stage (column effect). Oversized also adds the heft missing from many 2x12.

Lighter and half as expensive to fit with speakers. Easier to transport.

Design is important you can't just compare cabs of different sizes (volumes). This is science the box size, shape, porting all matter and can make or break a cabinet.

I will never go back to a 4x12. I use two vertical forte SV cabs for that.

I never likedthe orange 2x12 even though they get such rave reviews.
