my friend has a tiny terror and likes the tone he gets from it for heavy metal (using stock valve jr cab) - however, he'd like to have that tone or at least a very similar one with a separate clean channel

how close could a VOX AC 50 combo get?

Vox never made an AC50 combo, only a head.

I assume you are reffering to the poorly named Vox AC50CP, which I used to own (currently own a '66 AC50). The Vox AC50CP does not sound like an AC50, which is why some vintage Vox nuts like myself don't like them reusing AC50 in the model name.

If you do a search I did a review on the AC50CPH a while back. The AC50CP has some strange features, for example a gain knob on the clean channel. This was kind of cool, but the clean tones fell short of a Vintage AC50 or AC30. The distortion channel was okay, hitting the fat switch made it muddy, but gave it more gain. It could do 80's metal and that was about it. I owned an Orange Rockerverb 50 before the AC50CPH. The RV50 had a better gain channel and I liked the clean channel better on the Vox AC50CPH.
