I'm ordering a Chubtone soon and wanted to get some suggestions because I'm solid on some things but on the fence with some others. Just was curious what you guys think. Here are some of the things I'm considering:

So I want to do a German flag guitar. I have two "avenues" I'm considering. The first is a nice guitar with no relic look, gold hardware, birdseye, etc. and really clean. The second idea is a rustic looking German flag with imperfections and then relic the crap out of the guitar. Beat up, etc. Both would be German flag but two different looks.

I know I want the following:
San Dimas style body
Floyd Rose
One pickup in bridge (JB most likely)

I don't know alot about nut width, truss rod, etc. Based on my love of a Charvel San Dimas, what would you guys recommend? I thought regular jumbo frets would be good and I don't mess with the truss rod much so don't think I need the dial type.

Any suggestions would be great. I'm thinking as much gold hardware as possible would look really cool on top of the flag look. Like I said, on the fence with the rustic versus clean look. I think both would be badass. Thanks!

I don't get relics or relic'ing in general. I want my stuff shiny/new/perfect no matter how old it is. So you know my vote.

I am envisioning the aesthetic you are going for (which I think would look pretty damn cool) and I think relicing it would be the last thing I would do. I would go for as clean as possible of a look and I do agree the gold hardware would look great with the flag colors. You could even try to match the yellow gold of the flag as close as possible to the hardware.

Thanks man! Yeah, I'm leaning your way to be honest.

I think you are right man. Just like Spider said, it could really look cool being shiny and clean. I think the gold sitting on the red part of the flag would look killer too.

My original idea was to have this crazy tattered thing but the more I think about it, especially if I go with birdseye, is for it to look really top notch.

I like relics...but light relics. This way I don’t have to worry about dings and bumps.

But wouldn't dings and bumps you put on it be actual relicing? That's like me buying a car and before I leave the dealer lot, kicking my door panels a couple times because "it's gonna get some dings anyway".

It's funny you say that because I did consider just a light bit of relic around the edges. I saw a guitar on the site with that done and looked pretty cool. It is so hard to make choices when there are a lot of choices available....LOL

First world guitar player problems!!!
I’m not a big fan of gold hardware, but it would look killer with the colors of the flag. So would black hardware. If you go with a light relic, distressed gold would be cool. Like the dull brass knobs they put on their guitars, if they could do that.

First off, look at my signature. You had me tearing up earlier, I was laughing so hard about the Don Dokken post...LOL

Well, I sent my order to Curt. I have only had one guitar that ever had gold hardware, so I'm with you on that. But, I was thinking about how cool the gold would look in that middle section where there is the red stripe. With gold hardware and a black pickup, it would add to the overall look. I'm also getting a roasted birdseye maple neck. I saw one of the guitars on the page and looked killer. Thought it would fit the look more.

We'll see what Curt says, but I also have him looking into a bit of a "rustic" look on the flag. So, think like light blood spray look but black. Around the edges and then a bit over the yellow and red parts of the flag. Just thought it would make the flag not look so "perfect" if that makes sense. I'm going to see what he thinks.

I guess if it is not exactly what I want...I can always order a second one....LOL!!!

non floyd jumbo fret relic'd gets my vote

heavy relic'd. like falling apart relic'd. torn and tattered.

Lol, been there. It's overload at times. I went knowing exactly what I wanted and changed it numerous times. Only to finally settle on exactly what I originally wanted from the beginning.

Nut width - what do you have that you love currently? Go with that width.
Neck - same, what do you have that you love, explain that to Curt and he'll point you in the right direction.
Radius - I don't like compound radius so that was settled for me.

Relic? Same here, went back and forth. I figured it this way, if I went with something wood based i.e. maple top or transparent color I wouldn't relic. But since I decided to go stripped down, like I had wanted from the beginning I went with the light rode hard look. The look that settled it for me was guitar #71.

I don't know maybe that will help.

EDIT - looks like you ordered, good luck. Can't wait to get mine.

I absolutely love these simple, oil-finish guitars. So ‘purpose oriented.’
