I don't usually attribute those type of comments to ignorance. Generally, I see one or both of two things going on. 1) They're the type of person who's stuck in the narrow minded though process that what they like/think is best is what's best for everyone and 2) They're not exactly marketing geniuses and go about promoting their products using negative comments towards other products. I've found that often times these are the same people that in "private," "just between you and me" discussions talk smack about their direct competition.
There is justification in making comparisons to explain what sets your product a part from the others but it needs to be done in a way that's intelligent and doesn't come off as elitist or unreasonably negative towards others.
