I have everything photocopied as you said. I have one copy with my family, and I'll be taking the other copy with me on the trip. I also will be bringing proof of my hotel stay, flights, and the such. One thing about Japan is, shops aren't allowed to accept any currency other than the yen, so I'll be forced to exchange all the money I have with me at the airport. I'm thinking the worst part will be trying to figure out the subways, but I have some of those mapped out ahead of time, thanks to those handy online subway route thingies they have.

Not sure about Japan, but many banks give better exchange rates than those currency stands in the airport. Might be worthwhile to check into that. Even some larger banks in the US keep some foreign currency so you might be able to get it done before you leave. Also I have found that one of my credit card companies gives a pretty decent exchange rate so I just paid with that as much as possible to keep my cash to a minimum. Again not sure if they take American plastic over there or what your card company's rates are, but definitely worth looking into.

Everything I've read when going to Japan, they said to exchange it once you get in Japan at the airport, as the ones around here don't give as good exchange rates. Also, Japan is still a cash-oriented society, so I really won't be able to use my credit cards, except for pulling money out of a few international ATMs. I still have them for "just in case" emergencies.

Hit Yoyogi Park on Sunday and check out the bands, goth girls and Tokyo Rockabilly Club.

Asasuka is a cool area -some temples and a large outdoor market.

Go sit in the window of the Starbucks in Shibuya - on 2nd floor over record store. It's amazing to watch the waves of people going across the street. There are some nice vintage guitar stores in the area too. Harley dealer nearby too.
