what do you think?

i believe it is making a (well needed) come back. again and again i hear about re-releases of amazing albums from all metal genres.

There are tremendous metal, rock, prog-rock, and prog-metal available right now. Ignoring the fact that the best stuff never makes it on the airwaves, there's a ton of excellent music out right now.

Hmmm, I guess to me it never went anywhere...

Slipknot (love 'em or hate 'em) debuted at number one with their most recent album earlier this year and LoG debuted at around number 6 or so. Those are two very heavy records that will not get played on the vast majority of mainstream radio. Last year there were a few metal abums that debuted in the top 10 as well.

to me its obvious as to where it went, at least in the charlotte area of NC its all drugs, thugs, and killing related with rap music. more and more people that are my age prefer it and listen to it over everything else around here.

i turned my brother onto devine heresy. he's been metal ever since.

i just think it is starting to turn around. alot of that is happening: people are rediscovering heavy rock and heavy metal genres. just curious as to what everyone else is noticing all over the place here on RT. theres a wide and vast location selection of members here

Didn't Mastodon's - Crack the Skye debut well also? I bet their tour with Dethklok is sold out.

I was talking to a friend about this the other day, and I think the opposite. I think metal is fading away slowly, going back underground. I guess it depends on where you live, and the scene there. Where I live, STL...metal is basically ALL there is.

Most of the stuff I listen to has allways been underground. I never thought the popularity of metal ever faded away. But maybe I just don't pay attention to whats popular.

I just heard on NPR that two of Michael Jackson's albums are in the top ten. If that is the case, I wouldn't say metal is making a comeback unless Shinedown and Fallout Boy are considered metal.

rock radio sucks (here in lexington ky). Metal here is ACDC from the late 70's, followed by Aerosmith, and Enter Sandman.

yeah i agree. radio play is bliss. i dont think real metal will ever hit radios again. i started carrying my CD's everywhere i go and either listen to them, or listen to nothing at all with the windows down

Agreed.

Who cares what the radio plays? Great metal albums are coming out all the time.

+1 I don't wait around for the radio to tell me what to listen to. There is a lot of great music out there to be found. Metal never went anywhere.

It never went away. You just need to know where to look ;). The best metal is, was and always will be underground.

I dont know about a metal making a comback... in that to me it depends on what kind of metal you ar talking about but that said Mastodon's - Crack the Skye is freaking great! On of the best CD's this year IMHO.

I think it's gaining in popularity... but the quality seem to lower with each and every new bands... maybe it's just me?? it's always the same uninspired stuff, not catchy (or wayyyyy too cheezy) with boring riffs and lame solos..

I think that metal has always been there in the background, but without help from radio it was hard to find. With music downloads, forums, and hard to find metal albums that would be $20+ are now available on emusic, itunes etc at $1 a song. It is easier to find great metal. There are a lot of bands that I heard of, and looked up on youtube, or torrents, and I ended out buying a lot of their albums. Trivium, In Flames, Delain, Killswitch Engage to name a few.

Metal is like Madonna. It never goes away, it just reinvents itself every few years (and most of it's best years are behind it).

This.

growing up in the 90's metal was a far cry from being the same as it once was. metal that exists from past years and underground from word of mouth is different than gig's of this generation and interest growing from record labels and concerts.

hard to go see a youtube video live at ozzfest for example. or a local gig with metal interest.

i think its increasing from what it was, but its definately never been the same. and yes in large part, it has definately morphed into a different more challenging genre.

from that i think everyone can pick their own area they love. i like it all to be honest. i love the mathcore/deathcore/hardcore scenes and i think its gaining popularity
